CHAPTER TWO
DETAIL OF INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
2.1. Summary of Duty
This summary describes briefly about time, duration and types of duty I carried out during my
internship in the company. On our first day at MME we took an internship orientation in the
company about the company background what we are expected to do and what we are not and
some useful advices
Then after that MR. Samson the MME lead foreman gave us some information about the
working
sections and introduce us to the employees. Placing us to our working area was also Mr. Samson
duty. So, he placed me to work my first one months in HYUNDAI commercial Vehicles Service
Center. Since I was strange to things that were going on, I spent my first week just looking and
knowing of parts and tools they used in workshop. But the chief mechanic Adonyas by looking
my good intention to work, he gave me some tasks and ask me to help him with some works. In
this section I have been working on different types of commercial vehicles services (A, B, C and
D), maintenance and repair.
After my first one month at HCVSC I transfer to Hyundai passenger vehicles service center. As
I adopted the working environment, in this section I didn’t face much troubles regarding to the
jobs carried out. The tasks carried out in HPVSC were more of the same with in the HCVSC
since
their main objective is servicing vehicles. Therefore, the tasks I have been executing were not
challenge me. Some of the task I have been executing were servicing, checking and repairing
clutch, wheel cylinder, tires, engine oil, transmission oil, differential oil, power steering oil, fuel
injector, spark plug, air cleaner, fuel pump and so.
I spent my seventh and eightieth week in electrical work shop. Since no large Auto servicing is
complete without its electrical systems check and repair, electrical department also had a great
role. In this section I have gained good knowledge and skills on checking and repairing of
alternator, A starter motor, sensors, lightings, and so on.
Like the above three sections I also spent two weeks in the engine overhaul shop. In this
workshop
engines, gear box, differential parts are disassembled as to perform repair it was necessary to
7|Page
disassemble this car main parts. But in this work area most of the time we checked the parts that
makes the mechanism not to function properly (totally). Then we told to the foreman the
damaged
parts and the machine will undergo its repair in the machine shops. I have also tried to find out
what the body shop workers do in just one-week duration of time. In the body shop I have seen
how they repair damaged and scratched vehicles using different methods and tools. The
employees
of the section also help me to grab enough knowledge and skills.
The last section I have been working on was the HV painting section. This section like the others
section had a qualified and skilled worker. Like body shop I have worked in this center for one
week. Since it was difficult to paint a car in just one week, I spent my time by seeing how they
perform and trying to know the methods and techniques they were using to paint a car.
2.1.1. Section of the company I have been working
We have been working at MME saris branch service shop which has 6 main section
These are: -
1. commercial vehicles service section
2. passengers’ vehicles service section
3. vehicles paint section
4. body workshop section
5. machines overhaul section
6. electrical shop
1. In commercial vehicles service section HYUNDAI HD series vehicles like HD 65, HD 72
and buses (like county) are given mechanical service and maintenance.
8| P a g e
9| P a g e
5. In machine overhaul section the following maintenances are held Engine assembly and
dismounting, Valve adjustment, Piston and cylinder adjustment, Gear box maintenances
and so on. But also, the engines taken into machine shops outside the company for
additional works.
10 | P a g e
✓ Starter check and repair
✓ AC generator check and repair and so on
While I was working in this section the company workers helped me a lot through sharing their
knowledge and skills from the beginning to the end.
➢ While I was working at HPVSC one of the works I have done was relating to timing belts.
A timing belt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of
the crankshaft and the camshaft (s) so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper
times during each cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. It has teeth to turn the camshaft(s)
synchronized with the crankshaft, and is specifically designed for a particular engine. The
timing belt also be used to drive other engine components such as the water pump and oil
pump.
➢ The first thing we do before starting inspection is reading the job card. Job card is a card
that describes the date, the car type, car’s plate number, the type of service, maintaining
parts, and so on. According to the job card the car’s timing belt has to be check and
repaired. Timing belts are typically covered with polymer. Timing belt covers which
require removal for inspection or replacement. We know the healthiness of the belt by
checking its teeth and land most of the time.
➢ There are many kinds of timing belt failures like tooth shear, tooth wear, land wear, back
crack, oil contamination and alike. After we remove the cover and check the problem. We
see that the timing belt was damaged due to oil leakage from the engine. Since both the
timing belt and the sealing had a problem, we change both of them. When a timing belt is
replaced, care must be taken to ensure that the valve and piston movements are correctly
synchronized. Failure to synchronize correctly can lead to problems with valve timing, and
this in turn, in extremes, can cause collision between valves and pistons in interference
engines. Before we returned the removed parts to their respective position we check the
system is working (repaired) correctly. Then we return the cover and other parts to their
respective position finished the job.
12 | P a g e
➢ During my session in the electrical workshop I have done different kinds of maintenance
and repair. Starter motor check and maintenance was one of the major tasks I executed.
Starter is a device used to rotate (crank) an internal combustion engine’s operation under
its own power. As usual to start the inspection first we read the problem from the job card.
Then using the required tools, we detach the starter from the vehicle. But when detaching
the starter from the vehicle, care must be taken that the batter is not connected. Because if
it is connected, it causes a shock to the worker. Then we go to the electrical work shop to
check and repair. Starter motor has a series-parallel wound direct electric motor with a
starter solenoid mounted on it. Other parts of the starter are main housing yoke, flywheel
or pinion gear assembly, armature, field coils with brushes attached, brush carrier, solenoid.
Then we start to test the following things to know which part wasn’t functioning. We test
the continuity between S and M terminals, continuity between S terminal and ground test.
Armature inspections coil short circuit test, coil ground test, commutator out of roundness.
Field coil inspection coil open test, coil ground test. After we undergo this inspection we
concluded that the problem was due to the overrunning clutch. So, we replaced the
overrunning clutch and repaired the problem.
12 | P a g e
2.1.2 Specific job information
Some of the daily technical duties and responsibilities I had during the internship period were
different for different workshop. In the automobile workshop brushing all the brake pads i.e. FF
RHS, FF LHS, RR RHS, RR LHS (Acronym) with sand paper and cleaning the disk and drum,
changing the engine oil, changing the oil filter, Checking the level of steering fluid, brake fluid,
clutch fluid engine oil, inspecting for loose bolts and nuts, checking light (Electrical) systems,
checking tire pressure, checking for any leakage.
In the heavy-duty car workshop, daily technical duties include washing wheel cylinders, brake
shoes, springs, bearings, washers, seals, spacers of FF RHS and FF LHS, lubricating bearings.
13 | P a g e
2.1.3 Types of major work performed
1. Service and maintenance
Servicing is a series of maintenance procedures carried out at a set time interval or after
the vehicle has travelled a certain distance.as we know MME service vehicles upon the
distance they have travelled.
In MME company cars are serviced upon the distance they have traveled. Depending on
the kilo meters they have traveled their service level also differ. According to MME rule
there are four types of service. They are classified into A, B, C AND D service.
➢ Maintenance tasks commonly carried out during a vehicle service include:
❖ Change the engine oil
❖ Replace the oil filter
❖ Replace the air filter
❖ Replace fuel filter
❖ Replace the spark plug
❖ Inspect and Replace the timing belt or timing chain if needed
❖ Check brake pads/liners, brake discs/drums, and replace if worn out
❖ Check and refill power steering fluid
❖ Check and refill automatic/manual transmission fluid
❖ Grease and lubricate components
❖ Check conditions of the tire
❖ Check for proper operation of all lights, wipers etc.
❖ Wash the vehicle and clean the interiors
❖ Check shock absorber
❖ Check Suspension
❖ Check battery
❖ Check exhaust
14 | P a g e
As we listed in the above there is different type of maintenance as a result for any light
duty car must get periodic maintenance for their durability and long life so here are some
steps for servicing a car.
2. Body and paint work
MME also offers paint work repairs for scratches, scuffs and dents, as well as repairs to the
bodies of vehicles damaged by collision. These two sections tasks are related. Which means
most of the cars that undergo a body repair needs to be painted.
2.1.4. The type of work performed in this section
In the body shop the vehicle first analyzed by responsible persons to determine its damaged
parts. Then using different methods like hammering, welding, pulling and alike the worker
repairs the damaged parts. After that grinding and sanding takes place to make the surface
smooth or straight, but they make sure to protect adjacent panels and glass. Then using the
flat of their hand, feel the area to determine if repair is straight. They also repeat the block
sanding to help identify highs and lows. Continue to hammer and dolly the area until it
becomes straight enough, but careful as they may overwork the metal. Finally, after they
make sure the part is good enough to be released, the vehicle will be sent to paint workshop
section.
15 | P a g e
In paint workshop like in body shop the person who is in charge analyze the vehicle to
determine the place that are going to be painted. Then after the vehicle fully washed with
water. The repaired parts in body shop that needed to be painted will be sanded without
water. After that the worker wash the point of action with sand paper. Then using the flat
of their hand, feel the area to determine if repair is straight. If not straight enough the body
shop worker will correct the problem and the vehicle will be washed again. Then the metal
surface will be covered with putty. After the putty is dry it will be washed by using sand
paper to smoothen the surface. Filler will be applied on the surface after the surface dry.
Filler is applied to make the surface ready to absorb the paint. Before painting process
started the vehicle parts that are not going to be painted and its glasses covered with paper
carefully. Finally, the painting takes place in the painting house.
16 | P a g
✓ knowing & using different measuring instruments
✓ proper material handling
✓ participates in each work tasks attentively
Tools used
We were using variety types of tools according to the tasks we performed in different sections of
the company some the tools are given below in the figure:
17 | P a g e
• Diagnosing the possible problem of a vehicle from customer feedback or
recommendations of the test driver.
• Application of different machine
• The way how to troubleshooting problem
• Join broken parts welding (arc, acetylene or gas)
• Electrical troubleshooting (starter, alternator, spark plug, whole electric
system)
• Engine maintenance, (Problems with engine)
• Body repair, (dents, paints)
• Lubrication system
• Cooling system
• Steering system, clutch system
2.3. Learning outcome
We have gained many benefits from this internship program. The major benefits are described
below
1. Upgrading our Theoretical Knowledge
We have been learning the theoretical knowledge for three years but we were almost confused
with most of the courses and mechanical words but after we started our internship program and
saw things practically it became clearer and it upgraded my theoretical knowledge, so observing
the practical works helped us to have a clear and full understanding of some points that are
difficult to understand theoretically only. This internship has great importance on upgrading our
theoretical skills.
As we are engaged in the company through different processes we had a chance to develop
theoretical knowledge. we have minimized the gap between the academy and theoretical
knowledge of some courses with the practical one through understanding of hydraulic and
pneumatic applications Understood more about hydraulics and fluid power systems by
observing the way the steering wheels; break systems and etc.
18 | P a g e
More in detail I upgraded my theoretical knowledge about pneumatic systems. This is because
they use compressed air in a vessel as a source of power to operate many tools ranging from
hand tools such as air wrenches to floor mounted pneumatic punches. So, I had the chance to
read manuals and learn about working mechanism.
2. Improving our Practical Skills
The main aim of this internship program is to improve student practical skills by applying his
/her theoretical knowledge. During our internship program we get the following practical skill.
How to perform different kinds of services, maintaining and repairing of vehicles efficiently.
3. Industrial problem-solving ability
We also improved our problem-solving skills since it is one of the main focuses of the
internship program. We identified a problem on hydraulic transmission jack and designed an
efficient machine.
4. Improving our Leader ship Skills
We learnt that being a leader comes along with a bunch of responsibilities. Since we were close
enough to see and understand how someone has to lead a team or organization, we gain enough
knowledge about leadership. Generally, what we understand was a leader is the most crucial
thing for the success and development of a company.
5. Improving our Team Playing Skills
Working individually would take long time to accomplish duties and would be sole decision
making. Therefore, I learnt the benefits of working in teams for effective performance of the
assigned duties. So, the maintained and repaired vehicle will be delivered to the customer on
their due date.
19| P a g e
6. Understanding about work ethics
As we all know every organization have their own rule and regulations which helps to succeed in
economically and control the employees. So, one of the first thing the company has done was
giving us an orientation about the company’s rule and regulations. So, we understand that the
company gives a great care for our work ethics. As the time goes we develop variety of work
ethics like:
❖ Paying attention to our work
❖ Time keeping
❖ Being hardworking
❖ decent dressing
❖ not using a cellphone at work time
7. Interpersonal communication skills
While at intern, we interacted with MME staffs and support staff including; clients, cleaners, and
security guards. The intern was able to learn how to associate with the different social classes
thus
improving the interpersonal skills.
20 | P a g e
CHAPTER THREE
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
3.1. Conclusion
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge, skills and
met many new people. I achieved several of my learning goals, however for some the conditions
did not permit.
The internship created an opportunity to us to get insight into professional practice. I learned the
different facets of working within a company. I experienced that, trying to use our class room
knowledge along with practical experience is an important factor for the progress of projects.
Related to my study I learned more about how vehicles are failed, maintained and repaired.
There
is still a lot to discover and to improve. The methods used at the moment are still not
standardized
and a consistent method is in development. The internship was also good to find out what my
strengths and weaknesses are. This helped me to define what skills and knowledge I have to
improve in the coming time.
As we have seen so far, this project report has clearly presented the design of a hydraulic
transmission jack and all the necessary dimensions and manufacturing ways of each component
is
collected in a single design remark and list of manufacturing methods accordingly. The machine
can efficiently support the transmission and put it back into the desire place. The material
selection
and the manufacturing methods of each component is cost effective and very easy such that it
can
fully fit with the capacity of the company.
Thus, the company can accurately manufacture the machine using the obtained dimensions and
manufacturing methods of each component.
3.2. Recommendation
As an engineering student, I have observed different operating condition in the workshop that
can
be seen from efficiency, economical, safety perspective. So, I recommend the following
recommendations in my point of view.
