DSP W10 Handouts

This document summarizes a lecture on discrete time systems and digital signal processing. It discusses classifying discrete time systems as recursive or non-recursive. It also covers representing discrete time systems using difference equations and realizing them using block diagrams like direct form I and direct form II. Examples are provided of finding impulse responses from difference equations and exploring different realization representations. Readings are assigned on discrete time systems, difference equations, and block diagram realizations.

Digital Signal Processing

(EE-394)
Week-10 (Lecture 1&2)

Resource Persons:
Prof. Dr. Saad Ahmed Qazi
& Dr. Krishan Lal Khatri

What did we learn last week?

• We looked at time domain manipulations of signal including shifting
and folding.
• We also looked at convolution sum in detail.

Previous Readings
• Section 2.3.3 and 2.3.4

What are this lecture objectives?

• We will discuss Discrete Time Systems
• Then, we will look at classification of DT Systems
• Next, we will learn about DT Systems being described by Difference
Equations
• Lastly, we will look at Realization of DT Systems – Block diagrams

Discrete Time System

• A discrete time system is a device or an algorithm that operates on a
discrete time signal (called input or excitation), according to some
well-defined rule, and produces another discrete time signal (called
an output or response).

Discrete Time System

• So, we say that the signal x(n) is transformed by the system into y(n):

𝑦 𝑛 ≡𝜏 𝑥 𝑛

Or,

𝑥(𝑛) 𝑦(𝑛)

Difference Equation and Impulse Response

• Find impulse response of the following systems:
i. y(n) = 0.9y(n-1)+x(n)
ii. y(n) = x(n)+0.5x(n-1)
iii. y(n) = 0.5x(n+1)+x(n)-0.5x(n-1)

• Discuss causal/non-causal systems using input-output pairs and

impulse responses.
