General Conversation
CONTENT:
- Make sure you ask at least one question to your teacher during the conversation, or
you will lose marks!
- Develop your answers as much as you can:
* 3-4 ideas/items per answer
* opinions then reasons for your opinions
* what other people say/think/do
* what you used to do / are going to do / would do…
* include descriptions and comparisons
* you must show that you can narrate events (at the week-end I went to … with
… we did this, then we did that, and afterwards …) – you can do this in all
tenses!!! “Describe” or “tell me about” questions are great opportunities for this.
* Use expressions of time & frequency
* Make sure you stay logical in your answers
- Vary your vocabulary = no repetitions = only use words once, especially common
words. Use synonyms e.g. vieux/historique/ancien or beau/joli/impressionant
- Vary the pattern of your sentences – complex sentences can be much more varied
than “I like … because it is…! Try “I like … but I hate …… “ or “I like … but my
friends think….”, or “I like ……..if/except/although/however..
- Don’t play it too safe … you will be rewarded for being adventurous and taking risks
- Include tenses = even if the question is in the present, find a way to add a future
or past in your answer
- Use negative sentences – ne pas, ne jamais, ne plus etc. (see grammar workbook)
- Be as accurate as possible with your tenses – learn your vital verbs!
- Try not to hesitate / pause too much.
- Use fillers and questions to keep the conversation going, such as
Comment what/pardon, oui et non, ça depend, je ne sais pas, je ne comprends pas,
eh bien / alors, comme ci – comme ça,, Que pensez-vous?
- Focus on pronunciation (e.g. = do not pronounce the last consonant of words,
unless a vowel is coming up, as in nous allons or ils ont!)
