‘Part – B’ University Exam Questions

1. A hollow transmission shaft having inside diameter 0.6 times the outside
diameter is made of plain carbon steel 40C8 and the factor of safety is 3.
A belt pulley,1000 mm in diameter, is mounted on the shaft. Which
overhangs the left hand bearing by 250 mm. The belts are vertical and
transmit power to the machine shaft below the pulley. The tension on the
tight and slack side of the belt is 3 kN and 1 kN respectively. While the
weight of the pulley is 500 N. The angle of wrap of the belt on the pulley is
180º. Calculate the outside and inside diameter of the shaft.

2. Design a muff coupling to connect two steel shafts transmitting 25 kW


power at 360 rpm. The shafts and key are made of plain carbon steel
30C8. The sleeve is made of grey cast iron FG 200. The factor of safety of
shaft and the key is 4. For the sleeve, the factor of safety is 6 based on the
ultimate strength.

3. A steel solid shaft transmitting 15 kW at 200 rpm is supported on two


bearings 750 mm apart and has two gears keyed to it. The pinion having
30 teeth of 5 mm module is located 100 mm to the left of the right hand
bearing and delivers power horizontally to the right. The gear having 100
teeth of 5 mm module is located 150 mm to the right of the left hand
bearing and receives power in a vertical direction from below. Using an
allowable stress of 54 Mpa in shear. Determine the diameter of the shafts.
4. Determine the dimensions of the flange coupling that connects a motor
and a pump shaft. The power to be transmitted is 2 kW at a shaft speed
of 960 rpm. Select suitable materials for the parts of the coupling and list
the dimensions.

5. The layout of a shaft carrying two pulleys 1 and 2 and supported on two
bearings A and B is shown in Fig. The shaft transmits 7.5 kW power at
360 rpm from pulley 1 to pulley 2. The diameters of pulley 1 and 2 are
250 mm and 500 mm respectively. The masses of pulley 1 and 2 are 10
and 30 kg respectively. The belt tensions act vertically downward and the
ratio of belt tensions on the tight side to slack side for each pulley are
2.5:1. The shaft is made of plain carbon steel 40C8 (Syt = 380 N/mm^2)
and the FOS is 3. Estimate the suitable diameter of the shaft. If the
permissible angle of twist is 0.5 º per metre length, calculate the shaft
diameter on the basis of torsional rigidity. Assume G = 79300 N/mm^2.

6. It is required to design a bushed – pin type flexible coupling to connect


the output shaft of an electric motor to the shaft of a centrifugal pump.
The motor delivers 20 kW power at 720 rpm. The starting torque of motor
can be assumed to be 150% of the rated torque. Design the coupling and
specify the dimensions of its components.
7. A rigid type of coupling is used to connect two shafts transmitting 15 kw
at 200 rpm. The shaft keys and bolts are made of C45 steel and the
coupling is cast iron. Design the coupling.

8. A turbine shaft transmits 500 kw at 900 rpm. The permissible shear


stress is 80 N/mm^2 while the twist is limited to 0.5º in a length of 2.5
m. Calculate the diameter of the shaft. Take G = 6.8 x 10^5 N/mm^2. If
the shaft chosen is hollow with di / do = 0.6. Calculate the percentage of
saving in material.

9. A hoisting drum 0.5 m in diameter is keyed to a shaft which is supported


in two bearings and driven through a 12:1 reduction ratio by an electric
motor. Determine the power of the driving motor, if the maximum load of
8 kN is hoisted at a speed of 50 m/min and the efficiency of the drive is
80 %. Also determine the torque on the drum shaft and the speed of the
motor in r.p.m. Determine also the diameter of the shaft made of
machinery steel, the working stresses of which are 115 Mpa in tension
and 50 Mpa in shear. The drive gear whose diameter is 450 mm is
mounted at the end of the shaft such that it overhangs the nearest
bearing by 150 mm. The combined shock and fatigue factors for bending
and torsion may be taken as 2 and 1.5 respectively.

10. Design a rigid flange coupling to transmit a torque of 250 Nm between


two co-axial shafts. The shaft is made of alloy steel, flanges out of cast
iron and bolts out of steel. Four bolts are used to couple the flanges. The
shafts are keyed to the flange hub. The permissible stresses are given
below:
Shear stresses on shaft = 100 Mpa
Bearing or crushing stress on shaft = 250 Mpa
Shear stress on keys = 100 Mpa
Bearing stress on keys = 250 Mpa
Shearing stress on cast iron = 200 Mpa
Shearing stress on bolts = 100 Mpa
After designing the various elements, make a neat sketch of the
assembly indicating the important dimensions. The stresses
developed in the various members may be checked if thumb rules
are used for fixing the dimensions.

11. An overhang shaft carries a 800 mm diameter pulley, whose centre is


240 mm from the centre of the nearest bearing. The weight of the pulley is
650 N and the angle of lap of the belt is 180º. The pulley is driven by a
motor vertically below it. If the permissible tension in the belt is 2.7 kN
and the coefficient of friction is 0.3. Determine the diameter of the shaft
when internal diameter is 0.6 times the external diameter. Neglect
centrifugal tension and assume permissible shear and tensile stresses as
62 N/mm^2 and 82 N/mm^2.

12. Design a protected type flange coupling for the following requirements.
Power to be transmitted = 9 kW
Speed of the shaft = 920 rpm
Select suitable materials

13. In an axial flow rotary compressor, the shaft is subjected to maximum


twisting moment and maximum bending moment of 1500 Nm and 3000
Nm respectively. Neglecting the axial load, determine the diameter, if the
permissible shear stress is 50 N/mm^2. Assume minor shocks. If the
shaft is hollow one with K = di/do = 0.4. What will ne material saving in
hollow shaft which is subjected to same loading and material as a solid
shaft.

14. Design a cast iron flange coupling for a mild steel shaft transmitting 90
kW at 250 rpm, the allowable shear stress in the shaft is 40 Mpa and the
angle of twist is not to exceed 1º in a length of 20 meters. The allowable
shear stress in the coupling bolt is 30 Mpa. Take G = 84 kN/mm^2.

15. A solid shaft is to transmit 1000 kW at 120 rpm. Find the shaft diameter
if the shear stress is 80 N/mm^2. If the shaft is made hollow with
internal diameter, find the percentage saving in material. Take I.D = 0.6.

16. Design a protected type flange coupling for the following requirements.

Power to be transmitted = 10 kW
Speed of the shaft = 960 rpm
Select suitable materials

17. It is required to design a square key for fixing a gear on a shaft of 30 mm


diameter. The shaft is transmitting 20 kW power at 600 rpm to the gear.
The key is made of steel 50C4 (Syt = 460 N/mm2) and the factor of safety
is 4. For key material, the yield strength in compression can be assumed
to be equal to the yield strength in tension. Determine the dimensions of
the key.

18. A rigid coupling is used to transmit 60 kW power at 350 rpm. There are
six bolts. The outer diameter of the flanges is 250 mm, while the recess
diameter is 175 mm. The co efficient of friction between the flanges is
0.15. The bolts are made of steel 45C8 ( Syt = 380 N/mm2) and the factor
of safety is 3. Determine the diameter of the bolts. Assume that the bolts
are fitted in large clearance holes.

19. A horizontal nickel steel shaft rests on two bearings, A at the left and B
at the right end and carries two gears C and D located at distances of 250
mm and 400 mm respectively from the centre line of the left and right
bearings. The pitch diameter of the gear C is 600 mm and that of the gear
D is 200 mm. The distance between the centre line of the bearings is 2400
mm. The shaft transmits 20 kW at 120 rpm. The power is delivered to the
shaft at geer C and is taken out at gear D in such a manner that the tooth
pressure FtC of the gear C and FtD of the gear D act vertically downwards.
Find the diameter of the shaft, if the working stress is 100 Mpa in
tension and 56 Mpa in shear. The gear C and D weighs 950 N and 350 N
respectively. The combined shock and fatigue factors for bending and
torsion may be taken as 1.5 and 1.2 respectively.

20. Design a bushed pin type of flexible coupling to connect a pump shaft to
a motor shaft transmitting 32 kW at 960 r.p.m. The overall torque is 20
percent more than the mean torque. The material properties are as
follows:
i) The allowable shear and crushing stress for shaft and key material
is 40 Mpa and 80 Mpa respectively.
ii) The allowable shear stress for cast iron is 15 Mpa.
iii) The allowable bearing pressure for rubber bush is 0.8 N/mm2.
iv) The material of the pin is same as that of the shaft and the key.
Draw neat sketch of the coupling.
