Successful communication involves understanding
the cultural norms of native speakers. English,
even as a global language (or lingua franca),
retains cultural influences. To truly comprehend its
social and cultural contexts, we must embrace
culture as a dynamic tool spanning local, national,
and global arenas.

CULTURAL
AWARENESS (CA)
Cultural awareness in language learning means
understanding how closely language and culture
are connected. It is about grasping the cultural
context of language use and being mindful of how
our own and others' behaviors are influenced by
culture. This awareness improves communication,
connects us with different viewpoints, and helps us
navigate multicultural situations confidently. When
we weave this awareness into our language
learning journey, we engage in meaningful cross-
cultural interactions and contribute effectively on a
global scale.

INTERCULTURAL
AWARENESS (ICA)
Intercultural awareness is about grasping how
culture impacts communication between different
groups. It's the skill of using this understanding in
real conversations, adapting on the spot. It's
especially relevant when we talk about global
English interactions. It's like being quick and
flexible in adjusting to different cultures while
actually talking with people.

APPLAYING ICA IN
CLASSROOM TEACHING
Exploring local cultures.
Exploring language-learning materials.
Exploring the traditional media and arts
through English.
Exploring IT / electronic media through
English.
Cultural informants.
Face-to-face intercultural communication
(often with non-local English teachers).
