Narendra Pyasi is considered an artist with unique and melodious voice in Nepali music industry. “k bhul
bhayo priya”, “kasari juteu”, “timi bina ko jiwan”, “timile dine maya”, “timro dil ma”, “maya o maya” are
among dozens of popular songs by Narendra although “k bhul bhayo priya” is the most popular.Written
by Dr. Krishnahari Baral and music by Madan Dipbim, this song was recorded in 1985. Mr. Pyasi discusses
the moment of recording this song with writer for Annapurna Post Mr. Ashok Pyasi Rai.
How do I forget:
In order for a creator to be recognized, you don’t need many creations but the best. You don’t
need too many best creations. That type of creations mean a lot in the life of an artist and are very
important. One song established me and that is “k bhul bhayo priya.”
It was in 1985. I was at Music Nepal recording studio in order to record a song written by King
Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and music provided by myself. In the process, Madan Dipbim heard my
voice and told me that he had prepared a song and my voice matched for it and I needed to sing. It was
happy event for me.
After a week, she called me home and made me listen the song in a harmonium. I loved it. The
words and music were powerful. I was learning classical music at that time. The song was in “malkos rag”
and ranged from “manda saptak” to “tar saptak”. Ascending and descending, very beautiful. It was
recorded in 2 months after I heard it for the first time.
In the beginning, Music Nepal was located at Kalikasthan and we recorded it there but later on it
moved to Anamnagar with better technology, thus we recorded it again. The song you hear now was the
second one. The song was very beautiful. So, I really worked hard on it. It was recorded good and when it
came to public, it became big-time hit and the ripple effect kept increasing.
At that time, there weren’t many mass communication medias . Only Radio Nepal existed. Story
telling in songs, dedicated songs were among few popular programs in the radio. This song of mine used
to play in it for 2-3 times in a day. Originally, it was recorded for the album “Risaideuna Binti” of
songwriter Krishna Hari Baral.
At that time, music industry was not commercial as it is now. I sang it for free but the name and
fame that I earned from it are as valuable as millions of dollars. Till now, I have recorded more than 150
songs but whether it be in the country or in foreign land, people ask me to sing “k bhul bhayo priya.”
Although I have sung it several times with a harmonium, I donot have “track” for it. Since I get request to
sing it everywhere, I am planning to get one soon.
Singing and music are like different sides of the same coin in my carrier as a musician. I have
played music for over 250 songs with famous singers like Taradevi, Prem Dhoj Pradhan, Yogesh Baidya,
Dip Shrestha, Prakash Shrestha, Deepak Kharel, Meera Rana, Lochan Bhattarai, Devika Bandana,
Sapanashree etc. These songs have become very famous however, when my name comes up it is always
associated with the same song “k bhul bhayo priya…”.It has given me a different identity in my carrier.
Despite all this, I don’t feel like a singer.
Although I feel that there is a lot to learn from past singers and musicians, I don’t like the songs
and music of artists who are considered popular at this time in whether it be pop or modern. Sometime,
I reflect how would life be if I wasn’t involved in the music industry. Would I have been a fine-artist? I
learnt fine art at Bal Mandir with Basundhara Shrestha. I am proud of the fact that despite being
involved in art of drawing for a long time, I became successful in music industry. I was actually inspired
by my late father Pratiman to be a singer. He was the one who took me to Radio Nepal for voice testing
in 1973 after teaching me how to sing. I sang a song with my father’s music and Jhalakman Gandharva’s
lyrics “bina badal asina pani” and passed voice-testing. Later, in 1979, I passed voice-testing with a
modern song and started my career as a singer.
Before “k bhul bhayo priya”, I had recorded six songs. My first one was “samjhanalai laijau
sangali”. It was recorded in 1979 with lyrics and music of Badri Rawat. In 1981, I sang “bibastako huri
chalda” with lyrics by Bhairavnath Rimal “Kadam” and music by Deep Shrestha. At that time, this song
was extremely popular. However, the song that established me as a singer is still “k bhul bhayo priya.”
The song:
Ma sanga boldinau
Ratako kholdinau
Masanga boldinau
Badal chayajhai
Adhiberi ayejhai
Tuwalo chayo ki
Barsata ayo ki
Tuwalo chayo ki
Arulai naroja
Tadina nakhoja
Arulai naroja
