Study Plan

Tran Dinh Quang Loc is applying for the NTHU International Student Scholarship for the upcoming fall semester. He has immersed himself in courses related to machine learning, computational biology, and structural biology. His research interests lie at the intersection of drug discovery, artificial intelligence, and structural biology. He is currently working on a project to develop a machine learning model to predict the pathogenicity of protein point mutations under the supervision of Professor Lee-Wei Yang. He intends to enroll in additional relevant courses and complete his thesis in the upcoming semesters. Receiving the scholarship would provide necessary support for him to pursue his academic and research goals, including continuing his studies at the PhD level.

Study plan
Dear Scholarship committee,

I am writing to reapply for the NTHU International Student Scholarship for the upcoming
Fall semester 2023. I am very grateful for scholarship support in the last two semesters,
and I am very excited to take this opportunity to continue my studies with the support of
scholarship in the next two semesters.

I will be a second-year master student in Institute of Bioinformatics and Structural Biology,

College of Life Science in Fall semester 2023. Over the past two semesters, I have
immersed in courses related to my field of study, including Machine Learning 1, Machine
Learning 2, Computational Biology, Biological Database, Science. These courses provided
me with a solid foundation and a very important overview of the field of protein dynamics
and application of artificial intelligent on drug discovery. Besides focusing on courses, I do
my best to self-study and strengthen my knowledge of Calculus, Linear Algebra, and
Thermodynamics. The true thing that I observed is that complicated and wise methods are
derived from fundamental principles. How far I can go dependence on how deep of my
foundation. This is an explanation for all my effort putting on strengthening my foundation
over the past two semesters.

Thanks to the courses I have taken, I have realized my research interest lie at the
intersection of drug discovery, artificial intelligence, and structural biology. I am keening on
by application of all my learning on Machine Learning algorithms in analyzing protein
dynamics and drug prediction. Under the supervision of Professor Lee-Wei Yang, currently a
Full Professor and the Director of the Institute of Bioinformatics and Structural Biology at
National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), I have been able to join in a project named as
Pathogenicity Prediction of Point Mutations through Protein Structural Stability Analysis.
The objective of this project is to develop a machine learning model based on various
protein features, including dynamics, structure, and chemical features derived from a
collection of a bunch of known 3D protein structures. The ultimate goal of this model is to
use to predict the pathogenicity of point mutations in patients. I am eager to complete this
project in the coming semester and potentially transition to another project within
Professor Yang’s lab. For the upcoming semester, I intended to enroll in some other
courses such as “Advanced NMR Development and Application” and “Artificial Intelligence
for Decision-making in Healthcare”. These courses will definitely provide me with deeper
insights and practical skills about my research area. My fourth semester will be the time for
writing thesis and provoking publications.

Upon completion of my graduate program, I would like to continue the PhD study, further
doctorate level. At this stage, receiving the NTHU International Student Scholarship would
provide me with the necessary support to pursue my academic and research goals. I am
grateful for your consideration and look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the
academic community with the aid of this scholarship.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Loc Dinh Quang Tran
