Activity Sheet-Operations On Functions

The document provides examples and instructions for performing operations on functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of functions. It defines the rules for performing each operation, such as combining like terms for addition and subtraction, and finding the product or quotient for multiplication and division. It then provides multiple examples for students to practice performing each type of operation on given functions.

Activity Sheet
The learner performs operation on functions and composite functions. (M11GM-Ia-3)
Addition and Subtraction of Functions
When two functions 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) with corresponding domains 𝐷𝑓 and 𝐷𝑔 are added or
subtracted the domain of the resulting operation is the intersection of the domain 𝐷𝑓 ∩ 𝐷𝑔 .
To add functions, combine similar terms and simplify.
(𝒇 + 𝒈)(𝒙) = 𝒇(𝒙) + 𝒈(𝒙)

To subtract functions, get the difference between the two functions (remember to add the
opposite).
(𝒇 − 𝒈)(𝒙) = 𝒇(𝒙) − 𝒈(𝒙)

I. Given the functions 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥
a. Find (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) f. Find (𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥)
b. Find (𝑔 − 𝑓)(𝑥) g. Find (𝑔 + 𝑓)(𝑥)
c. Find (𝑓 + 𝑔)(2) h. Find (𝑔 + 𝑓)(𝑎)
d. Find (𝑓 − 𝑔)(−1) i. Find (𝑔 − 𝑓)(0)
e. Find (𝑔 + 𝑓)(0) j. Find (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑎 + 1)

II. Given the functions 𝑓 (𝑥) = 2𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 − 15 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 5

a. Find (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) c. Find (𝑔 + 𝑓)(1)
b. Find (𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) d. Find (𝑔 − 𝑓)(−1)

Multiplication and Division of Functions

When two functions 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) with corresponding domains 𝐷𝑓 and 𝐷𝑔 are multiplied
and divided, the domain of the resulting operation is the intersection of the domain 𝐷𝑓 ∩ 𝐷𝑔 .
However, there is a restriction of the domain exists, that the denominator should not be equal
to zero.
To multiply functions, we find the product of the given functions.
(𝒇 ∙ 𝒈)(𝒙) = 𝒇(𝒙) ∙ 𝒈(𝒙)

To divide functions, we find the quotient of the given functions.

𝒇 𝒇(𝒙)
( ) (𝒙) =
𝒈 𝒈(𝒙)

IV. Given the functions 𝑓 (𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 − 11𝑥 − 4, 𝑔(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 1, and ℎ(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 3

𝑓
a. Find (𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)(𝑥) c. Find ( ) (𝑥)
