Assignment 1

Q.1 A 300 Ω (almost real) open parallel wire line has 2dB/Km loss. If the wavelength
measured on the line is 3m at 100 MHz, find the primary constants of the line.

Q.2 Twisted line which may be approximated by a two parallel wire line is very
useful in the telephone industry. Consider a line comprised of two copper wires
of diameter 0.12 cm that have a 0.32-cm center-to-center spacing. If the wires
are separated by a dielectric material with 𝜖 = 3.5 𝜖0 , find L, C, and Zo.

Q.3 A printed circuit line 5cm long, is connected to a 1 GHz, 100V/50 Ω generator at
one end, and a 100 Ω resistance at the other end. Find the voltage across the
resistance. What would be % error in voltage calculation if a lumped element T-
model were used for the line instead of the distributed elements model? The line has
R = 0, G = 0, L = 1 μ H/m and C = 25 pF/m.

Q.4 For a transmission line the primary constants are R = 0.2 Ω/m, G = 0, L = 0.3 μ
H/m and C = 15 pF/m. Find the phase and attenuation constants of the line at 900
MHz. Also find the characteristic impedance of the line. Keeping other parameters
same, what should be the value of G so that the line becomes distortion-less? What
will be the characteristic impedance of the distortion-less line?

Q.5 A coaxial cable has 10 dB loss per 100 m length. A 100V signal when connected
to one end of the 50 m long cable the current from the generator is 3A. The other end
of the cable is connected to an impedance equal to the characteristic impedance. Find
the power loss in the cable and the power delivered to the load.

Q.6 A transmission line has Z0 = 65 + j5Ω and γ = 1 + j20 per meter at 900 MHz. Is
the line loss less? Find the primary constants of the line. For these primary constants,
over what frequency range the line can be treated as a low loss line? (Note: for a low
loss line α << β, say α < 1% of β).

Q.7 A 75 Ω lossless coaxial cable is connected to an antenna of impedance 100 +

j35 Ω at one end and to a generator at the other end. The internal impedance of
the generator is 50 Ω. What should be the length of the cable so that maximum
power is delivered to the antenna?

Q.8 A λ/3 long 50 Ω lossless line is connected to a load at one end, and to 100 /_ 0V /
50Ω generator at the other end. If the voltage at the input terminal of the line is 75
/_600 V, find the load impedance and the power delivered to the load.

Q.9 A transmission line with 𝑍0 = 50 Ω and γ = j 2.5 per meter is connected to a

load impedance of 100 + j50 Ω. Find reflection coefficient at the load end of the
line. Also find the reflection coefficient and the impedance at a distance of 3m
from the load.

Q.10 A 300 Ω parallel wire line is connected to an antenna of 75 + j35 Ω input

impedance. Find the VSWR on the line. What is the maximum and minimum
impedance seen on the line? If the maximum rms voltage measured on the line is
100 V, what is the power delivered to the antenna?
