Q1: Consider the following partial differential equation,

−yux (x, y) + xuy (x, y) = 0, (1)
where ux denotes partial differentiation with x, and uy denotes partial differentiation with y. An-
swer the following questions,
(a) Why is this a partial differential equation (PDE) and not an ordinary differential equation?
(b) What is the order of the PDE?
(c) Is this a nonlinear, semi-linear or quasi-linear PDE?
(d) Draw the characteristic curves for the above equation.
(e) Find the solution to the equation given the initial condition, u(x, 0) = sinx2 .

Q2: Solve the following quasi-linear PDEs,

(a) 2yux + uuy = 2yu2 ,
(b) x2 ux + y 2 uy = u2 ,
(c) (y 2 + u)ux + yuy = 0,
(d) xux − yuy = u + xy,
(e) xuux + yuuy = x2 + y 2

Q3: Solve the following Cauchy problem,

(a) yux + x3 uy = x3 y subject to u = x4 on y = x2 .
(b) ux − 3uy = sechu subject to u(x, 0) = x.
(c) ux + xuy = 3xu subject to u(x, 0) = x2 for x ≥ 0 and u(0, y) = 1 − cos y for y ≥ 0.
(d) uux + uy = u subject to u(x, 0) = 2x for 1 ≤ x ≤ 2.
(e) (u + y)ux + yuy = x − y which passes through the curve x = y − 1, u = y 2 + 1. Solve the
final constraint numerically.

Q4 Solve the following Cauchy problem for nonlinear PDEs,

(a) Find the integral surface of the equation pq = z which passes through the parabola
x = 0, y 2 = z.

1
(b) p2 + q 2 = 4z, which passes through z = x2 + 1 when y = 0.
(c) z = p2 − q 2 , find the integral surface that passes through the parabola 4z + x2 = 0, y = 0.
(d) F (x, y, u, p, q) = p2 +q 2 −n20 = 0 with the initial conditions, x(0, s) = s, y(0, s) = 2s, u(0, s) =
1.

Q5: Classify the following second order PDEs into Parabolic, Elliptic or Hyperbolic type equa-
tions.

(a) uxx + xuyy = 0, x < 0,

(b) uxx − 2 sin x uxy − cos2 x uyy − cos xuy = 0,
(c) uxx − 6uxy + 9uyy = xy 2 ,
(d) y 5 uxx − yuyy + 2uy = 0, y > 0
(e) xuxx − yuyy + 21 (ux − uy ) = 0,
(f) uxx + (1 + y 2 )2 uyy − 2y(1 + y 2 )uy = 0.
