My interest of learning English was born when my best friend Claudia, when we were twelve
years old, showed me some music videos of an Australian band. At first, I wasn´t really
interested to listen to their music because I just listened to music in Spanish. So, for me, the
was no point in listening to songs that I didn´t understand what was being said, what was
being sung. But she was really insistent, she was like: “They are really good, I promised, you
would like their songs, and you can check the translations of the lyrics. Please, I need
somebody with whom to share my latest music discovery.” I decided to give them an
opportunity, and that was the beginning of my travel learning English. I liked a lot their
sound, it was like a rock, pop, and punk sound. They played instruments and sang in their
performances, something that caught my attention, because at that moment, I did not know
other bands doing that, not with young members. I became a fan, I wanted to know all about
them, I started to see all their interviews, listening all their songs but the most important thing
was that I wanted to sing these songs in the correct way and understand the meaning. There
were a lot of videos in YouTube with the lyrics and the translation in Spanish, I practiced
with them, I listened to the phrase and then repeated it while I read its meaning and saw how
it was written.
In high school, I was one of the best students in my English class. I always had good grates
and my speaking was good too. But I felt that my English teachers did not teach me new
things, they just teach us how we can present us, how to conjugate main verbs and a basic
vocabulary. I wanted more. I talked to my parents about that, they were really supportive, and
the enrolled me in a language academy. While I was studying perfecting my writing and
speaking, I started to know the pros of knowing this language: 1) English is the most spoken
language in the world, and for me that I always wanted to travel around the world, be able to
understand and speak this language brings me closer to fulfilling this dream, 2) gives you
better job opportunities. Currently, all companies want their employees to know English
because the best articles, research and reports are written in this language. It is better for them
that their employees get the best possible information from the best sources and 3) you can
study aboard. The best universities are English-speaking or have courses taught in English,
which gives you the possibility of studying or obtaining a master's degree or a doctorate at
Last year, I decided that I wanted to study International Relations at the Peruvian University
of Applied Sciences. When I was researching the benefits of studying at this university, I
found the dual degree program with the University of Arizona. I applied, did the interview,
and was accepted. Now, I am in my second cycle and taking my first required course of this
program, English Composition 1. I have to admit that I was extremely nervous about taking a
course entirely in English because I had not practiced my English for a long time, I keep
listening to music and watching movies or series in this language, but I no longer practice my
speaking and even less my writing. I decided not to let myself be overcome by my fear and
dare to take this course. It is at this moment in my life that I realized how much my life has
changed since I started learning English. This journey started as a hobby but ended up being
one of the most important things in my life. I learned a culture different from mine, it made
me discover different realities, it opened the doors to new experiences -like this program- and
made me who I am today. It created an interest in me to learn other languages and I know that
this will bring me positive things in my life and help me develop professionally.
