GROUP WORK PROPOSAL

ABSTRACT
Group work according to Toseland and Rivas (2014:11) is a goal directed activity
with smalls group, aimed at meeting socio-emotional needs and accomplishing
tasks, of which the activity is directed to individual members of the group and the
group as a whole. Groups are classified into different categories where the
facilitator and the members of the group work together. For achieving the goal of
the group, this will be referred to as task group because the aim is to accomplish
a certain goal. In a group setting, different group members get to share feelings
and exchange ideas for the effectiveness of the group with the help of a
facilitator, as this is discussed by Weyers (2011:35) that facilitators uses small
group dynamics and resources in order to assist members to achieve individual
and shared goals.

PURPOSE AND NEEDS ASSESSMENT INFORMING THE

PROPOSED GROUP AND ITS PURPOSE
According to Toseland and Rivas (2014:165) it is very important for a facilitator to
first and foremost propose what the group’s purpose is. By doing this the facilitator
will prevent a lack of direction which might frustrate the group members, when there
is no clear direction within the group it may lead to an unproductive group experience
for the group members and the facilitator. The facilitator has chosen support and
growth groups and therefore the purpose of group work series with the women of
Beth-Shan shelter is to empower them to be the women they truly want to be and to
encourage them to stand up for themselves when they realise that they are in an
abusive relationship.

THE COMPOSITION OF THE GROUP

Composing a group according to Toseland and Rivas( 2014:174), the facilitator
should choose members according to their needs and the needs of the whole group.

The group will comprise of women in the shelter and will be the ages between 27 to
45.

The facilitator choose homogeneity, homogeneity indicate that group members

should have a common purpose for belonging to the group and that they must also
have similar charecteristics.

ORIENTATION OF GROUP MEMBERS

With orientation of the members in the group series Toseland and Rivas(2014:181)
mention that the group facilitator should screen the members for appropriateness
within the group and orientate them about the group sessions will be conducted. The
Primary method of orientation is an intake interview with each group member
individually.

The facilitator will use orientation in the pre session with her group members to
achieve three goals set by Toseland and Rivas which are

 To explain the purpose of the group: the facilitator will state the group’s
purpose in the beginning of the pre-session and ask the members if they
agree with the purpose and give them an opportunity to ask any question
regarding what was expected from e group during the group work series.

 To familiarize the members with the group procedures: The facilitator will
explain the outline of the group work series to her group members including
the number of sessions they will have and her report writing on each session.

 To screen the members for appropriateness: The facilitator has to screen the
members during the pre-session to establish whether the group is suitable for
their needs and whether their needs match the group purpose.
