Activity: WHAT’S WITH THE SHAPE?

Objective:
 Identify and describe the different types of volcanoes according to cone shape
 Differentiate the 3 types of volcanoes according to cone shape
Materials:

Procedure
1. Read and analyze the texts below.
Shield Volcano
Shield volcano is a type of volcano composed almost
entirely of fluid lava flows. It is named for its low angle profile,
resembling a warrior’s shield lying on the ground. This volcano is
tall and broad. It can reach to a height of 30,000 feet (9000 meters)
and roughly has a slope of 10 degrees near the base and 5 degrees
near the top.
This type of volcano is formed primarily by the successive
accumulation of fluid lava flows, which descend from the summit.
Eventhough it is very big in size, shield volcano is not as dangerous
as that size might make it seem. This is because the eruption of lava
out of it is not accompanied by pyroclastic materials.
There are many examples of shield volcanoes in the
Philippines like Mt. Iraya and Mt. Kanlaon.

Cinder Cone Volcano

Cinder cone volcano (also called scoria cones) are

the most common type of volcano. It is generally composed
of basaltic lava. It may occur as single volcano or as
secondary volcano known as “parasitic cone”. This volcano
has a shape of symmetrical cone. It can reach to a height up
to 1,200 feet (370 meters) and has a slope of 30-40 degrees.
The manner of eruption for cinder cone is
relatively simple. When the lava erupts, cinders of it are
blown into the air. These fragmented cinders fall a short
distance from the opening, thus creating the cone. The
eruption of this type of volcano is less dangerous compared
to other types but can be classified as explosive. It is caused
by gas rapidly expanding and escaping from molten lava
formed cinders.
There are many examples of cinder-cone volcanoes
in the Philippines like Taal volcano and Smith.

Composite Volcano

Composite volcano (also called stratovolcano). Some of the

grandest mountains are under this type of volcano. Its composition
includes felsic magma, which means it contains silicate-rich
minerals rhyolite, andesite and dacite. This volcano is tall, steep and
symmetrical. It can reach to a height up to 8,000feet (2,400 meters)
and has a slope of roughly 6 degrees near the base and roughly 30
degrees at the top.
This volcano is built from alternating lava flows, ash and
blocks of unmelted stone or cinders. The eruption of this type of
volcano is dangerous and explosive in nature. This is due to many
layers of lava and pyroclastic materials, the current of rock and gas
can reach 1,800 ⁰F and 450 mph, killing any living organism in its
path immediately.
There are many examples of composite volcanoes in the
Philippines like Mayon volcano and Mt. Pinatubo.
