QUESTION 1:

a) Compute the degree of static and kinematic indeterminacy for frame in in Fig
Q1

b) Analyse the frame in Fig Q1 using the FORCE METHOD.

c) Sketch the bending moment and shear force diagrams.

Hint: For your computations, assume a primary structure as having redundancies

at A removed. Acceptable solution should use virtual work through direct integration
OR using integration tables.

SOLUTION
Compute the degree of static and kinematic indeterminacy for frame
Static indeterminacy: Given m = 3, r = 5, j = 4, C = 0

i =3m + r(3j + C)
=3 × 3 + 5 − 3 × 4
=2

Kinematic degrees of freedom: Given j = 4, 5 constraints and 3 axial effects:

dof =3 × 4 − 5 − 3
=4

Analyse the frame in Fig Q1 using the FORCE METHOD

Step 1: Obtain primary structure

Step 2: Obtain deflections

In our solution, we shall use integration tables. We draw BMD for the applied virtual
loads.

Computation of EIδyy
5
EIδyy = ×5×5+4×5×5
3
= 141.667

Computation of EIδxy
5 4
EIδyy = × 5 × −8 + (−4 + −8) × 5
2 2
= −220

Step 3: Write and solve compatibility equations We write compatibility

equations:

EI∆X + VAX EIδxx + VAX EIδxy = 0

EI∆Y + VAX EIδxy + VAX EIδyy = 0

Substituting:

12333.33 + 640VAX − 220VAX = 0

− 6721.875 − 220VAX + 141.667VAX = 0

Thus: VAX = −6.35kN ←, VAY = 37.59kN ↑

Step 4: Solve for other reactions

X
Fx = 0
=⇒ 20 − 6.35 − VDX = 0
∴VDX = 13.65kN ←

Fy = 0
=⇒ − 15 × 5 + 37.59 + VDY = 0
∴VDY = 37.4kN ↑

X

=⇒ 37.57 × 5 + 6.35 × 4 − 15 × 5 × 2.5 + MD = 0
∴MD = −25.85kN m x

Step 2: Obtain deflections

We analyse the truss under applied loads using method of joints. First we get
reactions:

X
Mabout A = 0
=⇒ 100 × 4 + 50 × 8 − VCY × 8 = 0
∴ VCY = 100kN ↑

X
FY = 0
=⇒ −50 − 100 − 50 + 100 + VAY = 0
∴ VAY = 100kN ↑
