Notes

This document contains Assignment 1 for a mathematics course. [1] It instructs students to study sections 10.1 to 10.3 on limits and continuity and read ahead on derivatives. [2] The assignment contains 7 problems involving evaluating limits, determining points of continuity, and finding domains of continuity. [3] Notes at the end emphasize the importance of practicing limits, carefully solving problems, and reviewing previous mathematics concepts in preparation for an upcoming quiz on this material.

MATA34 Assignment 1 (1 page) Winter 2023

Study: Sections 10.1 - 10.3 for this Assignment 3. Be sure you see the Notes below. Read ahead
on Derivatives in Sections 11.1 - 11.5.

Terms and Concepts to Learn:

(Section 10.1) limit of a function at a number, limits that do not exist, limit properties, 0/0 form.

(Section 10.2) one-sided limits, infinite limits, limits at ±∞.

(Section 10.3) continuity at a point, continuity on an interval, continuity on domain.

Problems:

1. Section 10.1, Pages 459 - 460 # 1, 2, 13, 16 - 22, 24, 25, 29, 30, 35, 36, 39, 40, 43,
44 45.

2. Section 10.2, Pages 467 - 468 # 1, 2, 7, 13, 15, 18, 22 - 25, 29, 30, 38, 41, 46, 48,
56, 59, 62, 64.

3. Section 10.3, Page 474 # 1, 2, 5, 7, 10 - 12, 15, 16, 19, 20, 23, 29, 30, 35, 36.

4. Evaluate the following limits:

x3 − 1 1+h −1
(a) lim √ (b) lim
x→1 x−1 h→0 h

1 1 ax2 + 1

(c) lim− + (d) lim a, b > 0 are constants.
x→0 x |x| x→−∞ bx + 5

√ x+1 x+2
5. Find the set on which the function g(x) = x+1+ + 2 is continuous. Express
x−1 x −2
your answer using interval notation and the union symbol.

6. Repeat Question 5 for the function f (x) = ln(x − c) + h(x) where h(x) is the function in
the limit in Question 4(d) and c satisfies the equation bc + b + 5 = 0 and b > 0 as in Question
4(d).

7. Let f (x) = where a, b, c are constants and a ̸= 0. State the points of disconti-
ax2 + bx + c
nuity depending upon a, b and c. You should consider three cases.

See some Notes on the next page.

Notes:
1. You should attempt to carefully solve all of the problems on every assignment. Strive to
produce complete, well-written, clear solutions from start to finish.

2. Solving many, many problems is a necessary way to become strong in our course, but it may
not be sufficient. You will also need to study a lot of math too.

3. Remember that solutions to homework assignments are not to be handed-in for grading.

4. Limits are the mathematical foundation of calculus (derivatives and integrals). You should
work consistently and concentrate on your studying and practicing with limits.

5. You should take some time to look through Chapters 0 - 4 to remind yourself what you should
carefully review from high school and even elementary school. Review and solve problems
from these chapters as you deem necessary.

6. Quiz 1 on the material and problems from this assignment will be written at the beginning
of your tutorial in Week 3 (Tuesday Sept 19 - Monday Sept 25).
