Multiplication As Repeated Addition - 2023-24

Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups. It provides a quicker way to find the total or product compared to repeated addition. The number being multiplied is called the multiplicand, the number it is being multiplied by is called the multiplier, and their product is the result of the multiplication. Multiplication can be represented using addition, arrays, or the multiplication symbol ×. Grouping objects into equal sets and counting the number of groups and items in each group allows for solving multiplication problems visually and through repeated addition or the multiplication fact.

Multiplication
What is Multiplication?

Multiplication is repeated addition.

Instead of adding equal amounts repeatedly

to find the sum, we can multiply to find the
same result in a much faster or quicker way.

Symbol of
multiplication
is X
An Example:
In a class, there are 25 students. On her birthday,
Ankita planned to distribute 2 toffees to each student.
How many toffees does she need?

She needs (2+2+2+2+2+2+....... 25 times) toffees.

How large this addition fact is!

So there should be some easy and shortcut to solve this.

Hence, 2 added 25 times gives 50,

But the shorter way is 25 times 2= 25 X2 = 50
The multiplication fact is 3 X 2 = 6

Tells the total or

product
It tells how many
It tells how many
groups are there
in each group
Notebook Work

Multiplication is repeated addition of a

number.
For example -
2+2+2+2 = 4 times 2 = 4 x 2 = 8

Symbol of multiplication is X
Notebook Work
In Vertical form, we write as

3 Multiplicand
X 2 Multiplier
6 Product

The number that is multiplied is called the multiplicand.

The number by which it is multiplied is called the multiplier.
The result of the multiplication is called the product.

Practice 1
Q1. Write the multiplication fact for the following addition facts.
One has been done for you.

a. 6 + 6+ 6 = 3 times 6 = 3 x 6
b. 5 + 5 = __________ = _______
c. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 +2 = __________ = _______
d. 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = __________ = _______
e. 11 + 11 + 11 = __________ = _______
