Printer and its types
Printer is a output device that shows images or pictures created in the
computer on paper. It also produces a paper copy of your work, the reason it is referred
to as the hard copy. Printers are categorized in to two; Impact and the non – impact
printers.
Impact printers it is a type of printer that works by direct contact of an ink ribbon
with paper. These printers are typically loud but remain in use today because of their
unique ability to function with multipart forms. An impact printer has mechanisms
resembling those of a typewriter.
Examples of Impact Printers, Dot-matrix printers, Daisy-wheel printers, and line
printers.
Non-Impact Printers is a type of printer that does not hit or impact a ribbon to
print. They used laser, xerographic, electrostatic, chemical and inkjet technologies.
Non-impact printers are generally much quieter. They are less likely to need
maintenance or repairs than earlier impact printers.
Example of Non-Impact Printers is Inkjet printers and Laser printers.
Kinds of Printer
a. Line Printer – contains a chain of characters or pins that print an entire line at
one time. Line printers are very fast, but produces low quality prints.
b. Laser Printer – uses the same technology like those of copier machines. It
produces good, clear results and is generally quiet. It uses powdered ink for
printing.
c. LCD and LED Printer – Similar to a laser printer, but uses liquid crystals or light
emitting diodes or a laser to produce an image on the drum.
d. Ink jet or Bubble jet printer – sprays ink on the sheet of paper. It also produces
high quality text and graphics
e. thermal printer – an inexpensive printer that works by pushing heated pins
against a heat – sensitive paper. Thermal printers are widely used in calculators
and fax machines
