Chapter III Sample Study No. 1

This chapter outlines the research methodology used in the study. It employed a descriptive research design to determine the level of awareness of teachers from Batangas National High School on the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 161 teacher respondents. Statistical analysis including relative frequency, percentage, weighted mean, independent t-test, and ANOVA were used to analyze responses regarding teacher demographics and awareness.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURE

This chapter covers the method and procedure applied by the researchers to

meet the objectives of the study. This includes research design, respondents of the

study, data gathering instruments and data gathering procedure, and statistical

treatment of data that were used in the study.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive method of research. Descriptive research

can be interpreted as a descriptive study characterized "only" as an attempt to

define, describe or identify what is being researched as it is, while analytic

research tries to determine why something happened like that, or how something

happened (Ethridge, 2004). Descriptive research aims to highlight current issues or

issues through data collection processes that enable researchers to describe the

situation more fully than is possible without using this method (Fox, & Bayat,

2007).

The researchers utilized the descriptive method of research in order to

accomplish the objectives of the study which is to determine the level of

awareness of the Batangas National High School (BNHS) teachers on R.A. No.

10627 or Anti-Bullying Act of 2013. The descriptive method will be used because

of its wholeness on the investigated variables using interview and survey

questionnaire as data gathering instruments. This type of research design is

focused on present existing conditions and its purpose is to find new truth. It had a
38

major emphasis on the discovery of ideas and insights of every researcher. Lastly,

this study used quantitative approach because it utilized a self-constructed

questionnaire in gathering data.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are the teachers of Batangas National High

School (BNHS). The study determined the profile variables of the respondents in

terms of age, sex, civil status, and years in service. The teachers of the mentioned

school were considered because the researchers believed that they can provide the

data needed for the study. The total number of the respondents is 276 but only 161

teachers participated in the said data gathering due to time constraints and

unavailability of some teachers.

Data Gathering Instrument

In connection with the descriptive method, the researchers used a self-

constructed questionnaire as the major tools in gathering the necessary data.

Self-constructed Questionnaire. The researchers used self-constructed

questionnaire to gather data on the Batangas National High School (BNHS)

teachers’ level of awareness on R.A. No. 10627 or Anti-Bullying Act of 2013. It

was composed of two (2) parts. The first part focused on the profile of the

respondents which covers their age, sex, civil status and years in service. The

second part highlighted the respondents’ awareness on the subject law.

The questionnaire was made possible through the researchers’ reading of

various reading materials as well as getting information about drafting a

39

questionnaire. After constructing the first draft of questionnaire, the researchers

presented it to their adviser for some comments, suggestions and corrections.

After incorporating the comments and suggestions, the researchers made

the second draft of questionnaire and presented it to the adviser, panel members

and experts for content validation. After the validation and several revisions, it

went through a process of dry run to determine its validity and reliability. The

respondents used by the researchers in this dry-run are the 20 teachers of Luksuhin

National High School in Calatagan, Batangas. Their responses are retrieved, tallied

ans submitted to the researchers’ statistician to test the reliability rating of the

prepared instrument. After a day, the statistician provided the researchers with the

result and it yielded a reliability coefficient of .905 which means that the data

gathering instrument of the researchers is comprehensive and reliable to be used in

the actual gathering of data.

During the actual data gathering phase of the researchers, they administered

the questionnaire to the intended teachers of BNHS. The researchers even

explained the content of the questionnaire to be answer to their respondents. Most

of the questionnaires were retrieved after 3 days after they distributed such to their

respondents. After retrieving all the distributed questionnaires, the gathered data

were tallied and subjected into statistical treatment. These were analyzed and

interpreted in order to generate the findings and conclusions of the study.

40

Since awareness of the respondents on R.A. No. 10627 or Anti-Bullying

Act of 2013 was measured, the correct concepts answered by the respondents were

counted. Hence, responses were interpreted based on the following:

Scale Range Verbal Interpretation

5 4.5-5.00 Extremely Aware

4 3.5-4.00 Highly Aware

3 2.5-3.49 Aware

2 1.5-2.49 Moderately Aware

1 1.0-1.49 Not Aware

Informal Interview. This was conducted by the researchers in order to

interpret further the results and findings of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers made thorough researching to gather much needed

information to the present study. The information gathered were analyzed, and

collated for the first three chapters of the study. A self constructed questionnaire

served as a major tool to collect substantial information for the study. The

researchers prepared a letter of permission to the school head of Batangas National

High School before distributing the questionnaires.

After the approval was granted, the researchers went to the teacher-

respondents and proceeded to the distribution of the questionnaires. In the process

41

of gathering the data, explanation of questionnaires was done to the respondents,

clarifications were made and understanding existed between researchers and

respondents. Most of the respondents showed cooperation upon answering the

questionnaires.

After collecting all the questionnaires, the researchers made the tallying of

answers and approached the statistician for the right statistical analysis of the data

gathered.

Statistical Treatment of Data

In this study, the statistical tools used in analyzing the data were the

following:

Relative Frequency. This was the used to determine the distribution of the

respondents’ demographic profile in terms of age, sex, civil status and years in

service.

Percentage. This was used to determine distribution of demographic

profile of the respondents with respect to age, sex, civil status and years in service.

Weighted Mean. This was used to determine the level of awareness of

Batangas National High School teachers on the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013.

Independent t-Test. This was used to determine the significant differences

on BNHS teachers’ level of awareness on the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 when

grouped according to their sex and civil status.

42

One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). This was used to determine

the significant differences on BNHS teachers’ level of awareness on the Anti-

Bullying Act of 2013 when grouped according to their age and years in service.
