Academic stress is an unfortunately all too common problem among students of all ages. As the
expectations of parents and schools increase, so too do the pressures placed on students to
achieve higher grades, perform well on tests, and strive for academic excellence. Academic stress
can have a positive or negative effects on academic grades of grade 11 students. As high school
students progress through their academic careers, they are often faced with increasing levels of
academic stress. The immense strain and anxiety can quickly become overwhelming and can
negatively impact not only the student’s school performance, but also their physical and mental
wellbeing.
Thus, it’s essential for students to recognize the signs of academic stress, learn how to manage
their time effectively, and seek support when needed. Academic stress can have a positive impact
on students' grades in several ways. Firstly, it can enhance productivity since they are motivated to
work harder to get excellent outcomes and put in more effort towards their studies. When students
are under pressure to perform well, they tend to focus more on their studies and put in more effort,
leading to better grades. In some cases academic stress resulted in students to perform better at
school resulting in achieving higher grades. This motivation can also help students to develop
better time management skills, as they prioritize their studies and manage their time effectively to
accomplish their tasks and assignments on time. additionally, academic stress can lead to
academic excellence, as students strive to perform better than their peers. this can ultimately
result in better grades, which can boost their confidence and self-esteem.
On the other hand, academic stress can have negative effects on students' grades. Excessive
academic stress can lead to reduced concentration and focus, making it difficult for students to
retain information and perform well in exams. This can ultimately result in poor grades. Moreover,
academic stress can lead to anxiety and depression, which can impact students' mental and
physical health. These mental health issues can make it difficult for students to focus on their
studies and negatively impact their academic performance. Additionally, excessive academic
stress can lead to burnout, where students feel physically and mentally exhausted. This can lead
to a lack of motivation and decreased interest in their studies, which can ultimately result in poor
academic performance.
In this research we would like to address all the possible effects of academic stress on grade 11
students academic grades in school. Conducting this research focus on the effects of academic
stress on grade 11 students academic grades during 1st Quarter in Southern Masbate Roosevelt
College.
B. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Academic excellence has always been the goal most parents and peers expect from students
not only from the past but also in the present and will probably still be in the future. They believe
that this excellence is synonymous to better result in whatever endeavor a student chose.
Additionally, for most people, they wear this recognition like a medal that sets them apart from the
masses.
But oftentimes, most people only see the results but is oblivious to the hard work and pressure
one has to undergo to be able to reach this goal. They perceive that the student is excellent due to
genes or environment and does not give credit to the students effort and sacrifices to achieve such
excellence. Academic stress has been related to a number of deleterious impacts, including ill
health, anxiety, depression, and poor academic performance. According to (Travis et al) , observed
that there were significant correlations between academic stress and psychological and physical
health.
Academic stress can lower motivation, impede academic progress, and raise college dropout
rates (Pascoe et al., 2020).The academic stress most students experience can either be good or
bad depending on the situation. Academic stress has been found to have a harmful influence on
students' mental health (Li and Lin, 2003; Eisenberg et al., 2009; Green et al., 2021). Increasing
amount of academic stress have positive or negative effects on psychological and physical
problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness and stress related disorders, which can effect
academic performance of students. This study aims to verify what can academic stress do
positively or negatively to students in SMRC.
The purpose of this study is to determine the possible effects of academic stress on students'
academic grades. This study also aims to identify the effects of academic stress on the Grade 11-
students. Specifically, this study tries to determine and answer the following questions:
1. What are the effects that academic stress puts on the academic grades of Grade 11
students?
2. Where there positive effects of academic stress to the students?
3. What are the negative effects of academic students to the students?
D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The primordial purpose of this study is to address the effect of Grade 11 students of Southern
Masbate Roosevelt College Inc. whose encountered academic stress during first quarter of school
year 2022-2023. This institution encourages us to study on how to determine the common problem
of every student specially in grade 11 students and how change the school interact to the affected
students in academic stress.
Academic stress is natural student's response that prompts us to address challenges and threats
in our lives as grade 11 students. We all know that academic stress provides us positive and
negative effect that we need to find ways on how can we handle with it. With the help of this study
we can give a solution on how to deal the effects and signs of academic stress.
The primary beneficiaries of this study are those students who encountered the academic stress.
In addition, the teacher's also benefited by this study in a way that it will serve as resource data of
school in order to reduce or revise the task that makes the students feel difficulties. This study will
help both teachers and learners to avoid negative effect of academic stress and the benefits of
having positive effect of academic stress towards the students.
A salient contribution of our study has an impact on the side teacher's responsibilities to its
students, to the school, and to the teacher itself. This is yet very significant to us from the
perspective of academic fulfillment.
This study focuses on the effects of academic stress of grade 11 students in Southern Masbate
Roosevelt College, Inc. The data collection will be conducted to Grade 11 students in Southern
Masbate Roosevelt College, Inc. S/Y 2022-2023 who had suffered academic stress.
This study will not include other problems that are not consider as one of the grade 11 students.
The grade 11 students in every strand from GAS, HUMSS, and ABM are given the same
questionnaires to answer. In this study, we will be conducting 2 participants every strand that were
stated from Grade 11 students of Southern Masbate Roosevelt College, Inc. The study will be
done through utilization of questionnaire to the students as a survey reference only to the Grade
11 students of Southern Masbate Roosevelt College and will not be used as a measure to the
effects of academic stress to the academic performance of the students who do not belong to the
population of this study.
