History

Volleyball was born on February 9, 1895 in the United States, in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Its
inventor was William George Morgan, a physical education teacher. It was a field game inside a
team play area with similarities to tennis or handball.

The first ball was specially designed at Morgan's request by the firm A.G. Spalding & Bros. of
Chicopee, Massachusetts. In 1912, the initial rules were revised, as they were not guaranteed
regarding the measurements of the field and the ball. The number of players per team is limited to
six, and rotation is incorporated into the serve. In 1922, the number of touches was regulated, the
attack of the defenders was limited and the two-point advantage was established to win the set.

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was founded in 1947 and the first men's world
championships took place in 1949 and the women's in 1952. Since 1964 it has been an Olympic
sport. After a while, the classification of volleyball games was incorporated into the (FIVB), beach
volleyball in 1986 and the Summer Olympic Games since 1996.

Recently, important changes have been introduced in volleyball seeking a more attractive game. In
the year 2000, the duration of the matches was reduced by eliminating the requirement of being in
possession of the serve to score; You can win a point and serve in the same play, whereas before
you could steal serves alternately without the score advancing. Touching with any part of the body
has been allowed or the serve is allowed to touch the net as long as it ends up passing into the
opposite field.

In 2006, two possible new changes were proposed and tested in some competitions: allowing a
second serve in case the first one failed (as happens in tennis) and having a second defense player
on the bench with whom one could alternate. throughout the match. Finally, in the review
approved at the June 2008 congress held in Dubai, the incorporation of a second reserve libero
and the possibility of exchanging defenders only once during the course of the match are only
accepted.
History in Colombia

There are multiple versions to express how and when volleyball began to be played in Colombia.
One of the versions indicates that this sport was brought by American and European sailors in the
1930s, who, using rudimentary elements such as the two sticks that held a lasso, practiced this
activity in their leisure time.

Another version mentions the American School as the place where the practice of volleyball began
by decent North Americans, who began teaching programs.

And the latest version that exists says that it was the Jesuit community who promoted and
introduced this sport in our country.

However, whatever the truth of the story, the practice of this sport extended to higher education
with the founding of the Faculty of Physical Education of the Pedagogical University of Bogotá.
There, thanks to the work of Ana María Chávez, a professor at the faculty, the preparation of
teachers with knowledge in the specialty began.

Such a boom was achieved in our country that in 1938 the Colombian Volleyball Association was
formed, with legal recognition contained in Article 5 of National Decree 2216 of the same year,
with the participation of the leagues of Cundinamarca, Santander, Chocó and Boyacá.

In 1941, volleyball was included in the fifth National Games, with purely military participation. And
from there volleyball has been practiced in the neighborhoods, in schools, universities and has
participated in interclass, world and international championships.

What is volleyball? Volleyball is a light ball game, which has spread throughout the world. This
sport constitutes a magnificent exercise and entertainment, it is free of danger and its rules are
very simple. It is practiced outdoors or indoors, on a court 18 meters long by 9 meters wide. In the
central part of the court there is a net similar to that of tennis, and on each side of it there are 6
people, so that the regulation match brings together 12 players divided into two sides.

Volleyball rules:
The six players on a volleyball team comprise three attackers, who are close to the net, and three
defenders.

The player who begins serving stands behind the three players on the right of the back line of his
court and serves over the net to the opposing court, throwing the ball into the air and hitting it
with his hand or wrist.

Service is allowed only one attempt.

By hitting the ball back and forth over the net, with the hands, wrists, forearms, head, or any part
of the body above the waist, play continues until one team fails, that is, does not return the ball or
commits a violation of the rules.

The ball must be returned by one of the teams over the net after a maximum of three touches and
no player may hit the ball twice in succession.

The return over the net must be made without grabbing, pushing or holding the ball, without any
player touching the net and without entering the rival team's space.

Only the serving team can score one point; a player has the serve as long as his team scores points;
Otherwise, the privilege of serving shifts to the other team.

In a service change, all members of the serving team rotate a position, moving clockwise, moving
the player who was in the right front position to the right back or service position.

The first team to score fifteen points wins the set, as long as the difference is at least two points. A
volleyball match is played as a best of five sets. If there is a tie at fourteen points, play continues
until one team is two points ahead.

Matches are controlled by a main referee, an assistant, a stopwatch, a scorer and linesmen.
