Assignments 1

This document contains: 1) 10 questions for an assignment on force systems, with the total marks being 10. The due date for the assignment is August 25th, 2023 before 4pm. 2) The questions cover a range of topics involving forces, moments, and their application to solving static equilibrium problems for structures with cables, beams, cylinders supported by walls and bases. 3) Questions involve determining tensions in cables, reactions at supports, pressures between contacting surfaces, and representing systems of forces using vectors and force-couple models. The final two questions require explaining Varignon's law of moments and providing notes on vector concepts and free body diagrams.

Assignment 1: Force System

Date; 23/9/2023
All questions are to be attempted in Sequence.
Total Marks-10 Due date 25 Aug 2023 before 4 pm
Qn The bent rod is supported at A
1 by a journal bearing at D by ball
and socket joint, at B by means
of cable BC. Using only one
equlibrium equation, obtain a
direct soluttion for tension in
cable BC.The bearing at A is
capable of exerting force
component only in the Z and Y
directions since it is properly
aligned on the shaft.

2. Determine the range of force P

so that magnitude of Resultant
force does not exceeds 2500 N.

3 Rod AB is subjected to a load f

200 N at point c. Find reaction
at Ball and socket joint A and
Tension at D & E
4. A uniform wheel of 600 mm
diameter, weighing 5 kN rests
against a rigid rectangular block
of 150 mm height as shown in
Fig.4. Find the least pull,
through the centre of the wheel,
required just to turn the wheel
over the corner A of the block.
Also find the reaction on the
block. Take all the surfaces to
be smooth.

5. Three cylinders weighting 200 N

each and of 75 mm diameter
are placed in a channel of 180
mm width as shown in
Determine the pressure exerted
by (i) the cylinder A on B at the
point of contact (ii) the cylinder
B on the base and (iii) the
cylinder B on the wall.

6. Replace the three forces which act on

the bent bar by a force–couple system
at the support point A. Then
determine the x-intercept of the line
of action of the stand-alone resultant
force R.

7 The young tree, originally bent, has

been brought into the vertical position
by adjusting the three guy wire
tensions to AB 0, AC 10 lb, and lb.
Determine the force and moment
reactions at the trunk base point O.
Neglect the weight of the tree.
8 The light right-angle boom which
supports the 400- kg cylinder is
supported by three cables and a
balland-socket joint at O attached to
the vertical x-y surface. Determine the
reactions at O and the cable tensions.

9. Write and prove Varigonan’s law of

moment
10 Write notes on followings
1. Addition law of vector
2. Product methods of vectors
3. FBD
4. Unit vector
5. Cartesian form of vector
representation
