A. Match the sentence halves. Then, underline the adverb of manner in each sentence.
1. Joe was stopped by the police ........ a. and they played happily in the sand.
B. Adverbs of manner are formed from adjectives and are used to describe the way
we do things. To change most adjectives into an adverb, add -ly. If the adjective ends
in -y, remove the -y and add -ily. Now, change the adjectives below to adverbs.
C. Some adverbs of manner don't end in -ly or -ily. These are irregular adverbs. Write
the adjectives in their irregular adverb form.
1. The teacher was angry / angrily because I had done my homework careless / carelessly.
3. Our meal was awful / awfully because the chef hadn't cooked the meat proper / properly.
5. The happy / happily fans cheered loud / loudly when their team scored a goal.

G. Work with a partner. Without talking to them, complete the sentences about how
you do things and guess how your partner does the same things. Then, go through
the sentences with your partner to find out how many of your guesses were correct.
