Adding material from DIPPR database in Phast 7.pdf

Vicard,
Thank you for contacting DNV GL Software Support.
1. Phast is a pure consequence modeling tool so it does not calculate the likelihood of the
consequences. It simply gives all the possible effects, and each of them are modeled in
parallel. For fires and explosions, it assumes the ignition is everywhere as the probability of
ignition is not modeled. The user, as the analyst, has to evaluation which effects are more
possible, for example, if there is any immediate ignition to cause jet fire, if there is any
possibility for a delayed ignition in the path of the flammable dispersion cloud to cause a flash
fire, or a possible explosion if there is congestion. Therefore, this is really a question to the
analyst to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
2. You may add new components to the default materials list, and I have attached a document
on the topic. Note the new materials you added this way may not contain all needed property
data, and you will need to fill in all the missing data to be able to model it in the software, as
DNV GL has already provided all data we have and we are not able to assist on finding missing
information. Whether to include all components is also a judgement call, but the general rule
here for the mixture is to make it simple by just keeping the most representative components,
and I would perhaps just exclude them if their presence in the mixture is negligible.
Hope this helps.

for DNV GL USA, Inc.

Subject: Case 254563: Phast Model Enquiries!
Importance: High
Good-day,
Hope you are doing well. My main aim was to obtain pool fire scenarios for different vessel volumes.
However, as I conducted my different scenarios for different vessels for pool fire, I saw that the other
cases such as ‘Explosion, Jet Fire, and Flash Fires” were also displayed in the result. Therefore:
1. Does the result indicate that other consequences are likely? If so, how do you determine which is
most credible?
2. Secondly, I understand that Phast does not display all component for Materials, however, can it be
assumed that the main components are conservative for modelling? For example, in my mixture –
there should have been components such as i-pentane, 2,2-dimethylpropane, etc.
Kind regards,

Vicard Gibbings
