Midterm Lesson 2 Evaluating Functions

1. The document discusses evaluating functions by substituting values into functions. It provides examples of evaluating different functions f(x), g(x), and h(x) at various values of x. 2. Functions are evaluated by replacing the variable in the function with a number from the domain. This is denoted as f(x) where f is the function and x is the input value. 3. Examples show evaluating functions at values like f(1), g(-2), and h(3) by performing the arithmetic operations in the functions. Invalid inputs that are not in the domain return non-values.

Evaluating Functions

- means replacing the variable in the

function.

• To denote that we are evaluating f at x

function for some x in the domain of f,
we write f(x).
Evaluate the function at x = 1:

1. f(x) = 2x + 9
f(1) = 2(1) + 9
f(1) = 11
Evaluate the function at x = -2:

2. g(x) = 𝑥 – 2x + 2
2

g(-2) = (−2) – 2(-2) + 2

2

g(-2) = 4 + 4 + 2
g(-2) = 10
Evaluate the function at x = 2:

3. h(x) = 𝑥 + 2

h(2) = 2 +2

h(2) = 4
Evaluate the function at x = - 5:

4. h(x) = (𝑥 + 1)

h(-5) = −5 + 1

h(-5) = −4
Not possible because -5 is not
in the domain of h(x).
Evaluate the function at x = 1:

2𝑥+1
5. f(x) =
𝑥−1
2 1 +1
f(1) =
1 −1
2+1
f(1) = Not possible because 1 is not
0
in the domain of h(x).
Given f (x) = 2x − 4 , find the value
of the function if x = 3

f (x) = 2x − 4
f (3) = 2(3) − 4
f(3) = 6 - 4
f(3) = 2
Given g(x) = 2
3x + 7, find g(−3)

g(x) = 3𝑥 + 7 2

g(-3) = 3(−3) + 7 2

g(-3) = 3(9) + 7
g(-3) = 27 + 7
g(-3) = 34
