MIDTERM Lesson 1 FUNCTIONS

The document defines relations and functions, and discusses representing real-life situations mathematically. It provides examples of relations and functions, explaining that a function is a special type of relation where each input is mapped to only one output. Functions can be used to model relationships like a teacher assigning students, while relations are more general and can model things like a mother's relationship to multiple children.

Relation

- is any set of ordered pairs (x,y)

x-value domain

y-value range
{(2,3), (-1,5), (4,-2), (9,9), (0,-6)}
Domain
= {2, -1, 4, 9, = {-1, 0, 2, 4, 9}

(5,10)}
Functions
- is a relation where each element in the
domain is related to only one value
in the range by some rule.
- is a set of ordered pairs (x, y)
such that NO two ordered pairs have the
same x-value but different y-values.

One x value can only be

assigned to one y.
Let's try!
Given the following ordered pairs, which relations are functions?

A = {(1,2), (2,3), (3,4), (4,5)}

B = {(3,3), (4,4), (5,5), (6,6)}
C = {(1,0), (0, 1, (-1,0), (0,-1)}
D = {(a,b), (b, c), (c,d), (a,d)}
