6. RESPONSIBILITIES ON SITE

6.1 Interlock paving blocks installation work and related activities

shall be undertaken by a dedicated group headed by a Foreman
under the over-all supervision of a Site Engineer.

6.2 The Land Surveyor shall be responsible for the correct layout of
the alignment and elevation of the garden kerb and interlock
concrete paving blocks.

6.3 The Site Engineer shall raise the necessary Request for
Inspection (RFI) for all the paving blocks sub-base compaction,
placing of sand laying course and inspection of laid interlock
concrete paving blocks. All other intermediate activities shall be
under surveillance point.

6.4 The Site Engineer shall be responsible for the quality aspect of
the work and compliance with this Method Statement and Project
Specifications.

6.5 Health, Safety and Environmental issues are addressed in

accordance with the approved HSE Plan (Document Submittal
No. CP 300(a)- DS-BOTH-01 /008) under the supervision of the
Site Safety Officers.

7. WORK PROCEDURE

7.1 Interlock Concrete Paving Blocks Quality Control

The actual sizes of the paving blocks as determined in

accordance with BS 6717: Part 1 shall not deviate from the work

size dimension by more than the following tolerances, and

random samples are to be site checked before use:

 Length: +/-2mm
 Width: +/-2mm
 Thickness: +/-3mm

The surface of paving blocks shall not exhibit any defects such as
flaking.

The compressive strength of interlock concrete paving block shall

be as follows:

 The average compressive strength of 16 blocks tested in

accordance with BS 6717 Part 1 shall not be less than 49
Mpa;
 The compressive strength of any individual block shall not
be less than 40 Mpa.

Water absorption of interlock concrete paving blocks shall be as

follows:

 An average of 3 specimens tested in accordance with

ASTM C936 shall not be greater than 5%;
 No individual result shall be greater than 7%.

7.2 Preparatory Works

The Land Surveyor shall layout the correct alignment and

elevation of the garden kerb to serve as separator for the area
where ceramic tiles will be installed and the adjacent portion to be
paved with interlock concrete paving blocks.

Prepare the sub-base for the garden kerb, thoroughly compacting

it and set to the correct elevation so that when laid on mortar
bedding, the top of the garden kerb levels with the top of the
adjacent future concrete paving blocks and ceramic tiles.

Mix the mortar bedding for the garden kerb comprising of 1 part
cement & 4 parts sand by volume to a trowellable consistency.

Lay the garden kerb to the correct alignment and elevation set by
the Surveyor.

Both sides of the garden kerb shall be poured OPC 20/20

concrete, triangular in shape, sloping approximately 45 o and
extending 100 mm from the base of the garden kerb.

Allow the OPC 20/20 concrete sidings to set firmly after which
backfilling and compaction of fill material on both sides of the
garden kerb shall be made simultaneously, avoiding any
unbalanced lateral load which may displace the garden kerb.

The sub-base for the interlock concrete paving blocks shall be

levelled and compacted to 92% of the maximum dry density
according to ASTM D1557 to an approximate depth of 110 mm
below the designed elevation of top of interlock concrete paving
blocks.

7.3 Interlock Paving Blocks Installation

A laying course consisting of washed sand, which complies with

the corresponding grading requirement given in Table 8.2 Section
6 Part 8 of QCS, shall be placed on top of the compacted sub-
base. The sand shall be placed in a moist but not saturated
condition and shall be compacted so that a laying course
thickness of approximately 50 mm is formed.

Laying of paving blocks shall commence at right angles to the

main pavement axis at one end of the area.

Paving blocks shall be laid on the sand laying course in such a

manner as not to disturb the blocks already laid.

Each block shall be placed firmly against its neighbour so that

they fit closely together. The paving blocks shall be laid on the
laying course and compacted using a plate compactor with a
plate area of not less than 0.25m 2, transmitting an effective
pressure of not less than 75 Kpa of plate at a frequency of
vibration in the range of 75 Hz to 100Hz.

Joints between blocks shall not exceed 3 mm.

The joints between the paving blocks shall be filled with dry
jointing sand by spreading it over the surface and brushing it into
the joints. The dry sand shall be natural and shall comply with the
corresponding grading requirement given in Table 8.2 Section 6

Part 8 of QCS. The paving blocks shall be vibrated to ensure that

the joints have been completely filled.

Where blocks do not fit the edge restraints or other obstructions

such as manholes or upstands, the gaps shall be filled using cut
blocks.

Blocks shall be cut using only a mechanical or hydraulic block

splitter.

A maximum deviation for the block paving from design levels of

+/-6 mm shall be maintained.

8. SAFETY PROCEDURES

8.1 The responsible Site Engineer shall physically inspect the working
area to confirm that it is cleared of any hazard and/or obstructions
that may hinder access or proper execution of the work.

8.2 The Site Engineer shall ensure that all personnel engaged in the
interlock concrete paving blocks installation works and related
activities are wearing the required Personal Protective
Equipments (PPE).

8.3 Health, Safety and Environmental issues shall be addressed in
