Our Values In Action
UMS is a part of Muhammadiyah, a prominent Islamic organization
founded in 1912 in Indonesia. With the goal of modernizing and
transforming the community, its founding members aimed to address
the challenges faced by the community through education and
community development initiatives. The organization has since grown
to become one of the largest and most influential Islamic organizations
in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, with over 30 million members
worldwide. In keeping with its founding mission, Muhammadiyah
remains at the forefront of community development efforts, promoting
education, community empowerment, and social justice for all. At UMS,
we wholeheartedly embrace this purpose and strive to embody these
values in all that we do.

Community Transformation

the wider society. Our programs are designed to not only enhance the knowledge and skills of our
students but also to promote community growth and advancement. We believe that education is a
powerful tool for social change, and we strive to embody this belief in all of our efforts.

belief and is dedicated to providing students with a well-rounded education that prepares them not just
for their careers, but also for a purposeful life. Our curriculum is designed to broaden students'
perspectives and help them understand the world around them, so that they may be equipped to make

Beyond the Classroom:
Entrepreneurship, Alumni Network, and
Muhammadiyah Network at UMS
Our commitment to providing our students with the skills and knowledge they need
to succeed in today's fast-paced and ever-changing job market is just relentless.

16
Provide jobs for others!
One of the key ways we achieve this is through our emphasis on
entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is particularly important in a
developing country like Indonesia, as it plays a crucial role in
driving economic growth and creating jobs. By providing our
students with the skills and knowledge they need to start and
grow their own businesses, we are not only helping them to create
their own opportunities, but also contributing to the development
of the country as a whole.

A lot of our alumni have gone on to establish their own businesses

and create jobs, and we are proud of the role we have played in
helping them to achieve this. Our study programs have integrated
entrepreneurial components, which provide students with the
knowledge and skills they need to start and grow their own A World of Opportunities
businesses.
In addition to our emphasis on entrepreneurship, UMS also
provides students with the benefits of a vast alumni network. We
have produced hundreds of alumni throughout the years, and our
graduates are working in hundreds of sectors all over Indonesia
and the world. This network provides our future graduates with a
wealth of opportunities for career development, as well as a
valuable network of professional connections that can be
leveraged throughout their careers.

Furthermore, UMS is a part of Muhammadiyah network, which not

only includes other Muhammadiyah universities, but also includes
a network of schools, hospitals, and other institutions. This
network provides our graduates with a wide range of
opportunities for career development and advancement, both
within the Muhammadiyah organization and outside of it. The
network is a valuable resource for our graduates, as it can provide
them with access to job openings and mentorship opportunities,
as well as a sense of community and support as they navigate their
careers.

Transforming
Community
through Research
At Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), we
are committed to driving the transformation of our
community through research. Our research is not
just about bridging the gap between academia and
the community, but it is also about being natively
built within the community. Our central message is
one of enlightenment and transformation, as we
strive to identify better ways of doing things and
establish sustainable living for all members of our
community.

18
Fostering Community
through Research
Our drive to shed light on the community is not just a
claim, but it is something that we actively strive to do
through our research. We do this in two ways. First, we
inform policy makers and decision-makers about the
issues faced by our community and the solutions that
our research has identified. Secondly, we implement the
results of our research directly in the community,
through community outreach programs and other
initiatives. By fostering the community in this way, we
are not only improving the lives of individuals, but we are
also working towards creating a more sustainable and
equitable society for all.

Advancing Society
through Research
Our drive to identify better ways of doing things is at
the core of our research at UMS. We are constantly
looking for ways to advance society and establish
sustainable living. Our research is focused on finding
solutions to the problems faced by our community and
implementing those solutions in a way that benefits
everyone. We believe that by constantly looking for
ways to improve, we can help create a better future for
all members of our community.

19
At Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), we understand that
teaching, research, and community involvement are interconnected and
mutually reinforcing. That is why we have built an ecosystem in which our
research, teaching, and community engagement work together in
synergy to create a more dynamic, impactful, and sustainable institution.

Our approach is to see teaching, research, and community engagement

not as siloed components, but as an interwoven triad that supports and is
supported by the others. By connecting our research to our teaching, we
provide students with hands-on experience that deepens their
understanding of the subjects they are studying. And by involving our
students in our community engagement, we give them the opportunity
to apply their knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in the world.

Furthermore, our community engagement activities are also closely tied

to our research efforts. By working closely with the community, local
organizations and industries, we are able to identify real-world problems
that need solving and conduct research that addresses those issues. This
not only benefits the community but also enrich our teaching and
research by providing us with new insights and perspectives.

By fostering this interwoven relationship between teaching, research, and

community engagement, we are able to achieve a greater degree of
impact and effectiveness than we would be able to achieve by focusing on
any one of these areas alone.

world-class education that prepares them for success in an increasingly interconnected and
globalized world. One of the ways we achieve this is through our emphasis on internationalization.

We are proud to have a vast network of international partners, which includes universities, research
institutions, and organizations from around the world. These partnerships not only provide our
students with opportunities to study abroad and gain international experience, but also allow us to
collaborate on research projects, exchange best practices, and co-create new knowledge.

Our student body is also diverse, we have a large number of international students who come from
various countries. They bring different perspectives and experiences to our campus, which enriches
the learning environment for all students.
Additionally, our academic staff is diverse, many of our faculty members have graduated from
reputable international institutions, and have experience working and conducting research in
different countries. This allows them to bring a global perspective to their teaching and research,
which benefits our students.

We believe that studying at an internationally oriented institution such as UMS provides students
with a unique set of skills and experiences that will be valuable in today's globalized world.
Furthermore, partnering with our internationally oriented institution also benefits other
stakeholders, such as researchers and organizations, by providing them with access to a diverse
network of experts and collaborators, and opportunities for international collaboration.
