INTRODUCTION

 It was developed by Dr. Hosur Narayana Murthy, NIMHANS.

 It is self-administered questionnaire prepared and


standardized for the Indian Clinical Population.

 It was developed and is based on the pattern of MMPI.


Background of the Test
➢ The MMPI was developed during the late 1930s at the University of
Minnesota Hospital as an aid to psychiatric diagnosis of clinical
patients.

➢ It is called as ‘multiphasic’ because it was designed to detect several


psychiatric and pathological problems.

➢ MMPI was developed by Stark Hathway and J. C. McKinley in 1943.

➢ Items- 567 items comprising 10 clinical scales and 7 validity scales.

➢ Age - 16-84 years

➢ Use – Used as a diagnostic tool to help in the diagnosis clarification


and in assessment of personality.

 The Multiphasic Questionnaire has 100 items which falls under the 7 clinical scales
and 1 Validity Scale:

Hysteria Scale - Unconscious use of physical & mental symptoms to avoid

conflicts & responsibilities

 Standard Interpretation of Elevated Scale - Reaction to stress by developing

physical symptoms

Paranoia Scale - Abnormal suspiciousness, delusions of grandeur &

persecution

 Standard Interpretation of Elevated Scale - Excessively suspicious, hostile,

argumentative & guarded


DESCRIPTION OF THE TEST
Mania Scale – Elated unstable mood, psychomotor excitement, and flight of
ideas

 Standard Interpretation of Elevated Scale - Emotional excitement,


hyperactivity, agitation, flight of ideas

Schizophrenia Scale – Bizarre, unusual thoughts or behavior, social


alienation, peculiar perceptions

 Standard Interpretation of Elevated Scale - Psychotic behavior,


disorganization, disorientation, confusion, withdrawal, hallucination and
delusion.

Psychopathic Deviance Scale - Repeated disregard of social customs, emotional
shallowness and inability to learn from experiences

 Standard Interpretation of Elevated Scale - Anti-social behavior, difficulty


adhering to social standards

Depression - Clinical Depression

 Standard Interpretation of Elevated Scale - Extreme pessimism,


hopelessness, slowing of thought and actions.

K Scale - Correction Scale - Suggest defensiveness in admitting certain


problems.

 Standard Interpretation of Elevated Scale - A high K score indicates an


attempt to fake good, and low score indicates a deliberate attempt to fake bad.
