Strain Tensor
1. The displacement field for a body is given by u = (x2 + y)i + (3 + z)j + (x2 + 2y)k. Determine
the deformed position and strain of a point originally at (3,1,-2). Also write strain tensor.
2. Two points P and Q in the undeformed body have coordinates (0, 0, 1) and (2, 0, -1)
respectively. The displacement field is given by u = (x2 + y)i + (3 + z)j + (x2 + 2y)k. What
is the distance between P and Q after deformation? Also determine strain at a point (0, 0,

3. Consider the displacement field u = [y2 i + 3yzj + (4 + 6x2)k]10-2. What are the rectangular
strain components at the point P (1, 0, 2)? Use only linear terms.
4. The displacement field in micro units for a body is given by u = (x2 + y)i + (3 + z)j + (x2 +
2y)k. Determine the principal strains at (3, 1, -2) and the direction of the minimum
principal strain.
5. The displacement field for a body is given by u = (x2 + y)i + (3 + z)j + (x2 + 2y)k, determine
strain tensor at point (2, 3, 1).
6. If the displacement field is given by u = kxy, v = kxy, w = 2k(x + y)z, where k is a constant
small enough to ensure applicability of the small deformation theory,
a. Write down the strain matrix,
b. What is the strain in the direction l = m = n = 1/√3

8. The general displacement field in a body in Cartesian coordinate is given as u = 0.015 x2y
+ 0.03, v = 0.005 y2 + 0.03 xz, w = 0.003 z2 + 0.001 yz + 0.005. Find the strain for point
(1, 0, 2).
9. The square plate in Figure 2.1 is loaded so that the plate is in a state of plain strain 𝜖𝑧𝑧 =
𝜖𝑧𝑥 = 𝜖𝑧𝑦 = 0. Determine the displacements for the plate for the deformations shown
and the strain components for the (x, y) coordinate axes.
