What is It

Introduction to Travel

Travel refers to the activity of travellers. It is going from one place to another – and
doing things when arriving there – for reasons not associated with everyday life. A
traveler is someone who moves between different geographic locations, for any
purpose and any duration. The visitor is a particular type of traveller and
consequently tourism is a subset of travel.

Travel is usually divided into 2 categories: leisure and business travel. Leisure travel
is travel for the purpose of enjoyment. The person travels to take a vacation , to get
away from his/her every home. On the other hand, business travel is travel beyond
one’s general home area for a reasons related to work.( Mancini,2011)

There are several reasons for a tourist to visit a place of some interest. The visit may
be due to historical place, religious significance, shopping, and sometimes it could
be manmade tourist attraction that creates a tourist interest and curiosity. The
activities that are managed to boost tourism services is called tourism management.
Travel Services encompasses event and conference planning organizations, travel
companies and organizations, as well as associations, government agencies and

5
companies that specialize in serving the needs of the tourism sector as a whole. It
connect business and people, generating destination awareness and information
among potential travelers.
Once an idea of visiting tourist destination is sold to the tourists everyone involved-
transporters, hotel, tourist agents, food services and other allied services entities are
benefited, in addition to the tourist. This chain reaction generated gives a fill-up to
the development of tourism. Tourism has developed an important part of the
economic foundation of many countries.

Components of Travel Services

.
There are a few core types of travel services in every destination. Essentially, travel
services are those processes used by guests to book components of their trip. Let’s
explore these services in more detail.
1. Travel Agencies

A travel agency is a business that operates as the intermediary between the

travel industry (supplier) and the traveller (purchaser). Part of the role of the travel
agency is to market pre-packaged travel tours and holidays to potential travellers.
The agency can further function as a broker between the traveller and hotels, car
rentals, and tour companies (Goeldner & Ritchie, 2003).

A travel agent is a person with direct

point of contact for a traveller who is
researching and intending to
purchase packages and experiences through
an agency. Travel agents can specialize in
certain types of travel including specific
destinations; outdoor adventures; and
backpacking, rail, cruise, cycling, or culinary
tours, to name a few.

2.Online Travel Agents (OTAs)

Online travel agents are increasingly important for hotels, because they serve as both
a marketing and distribution channel. Online travel agents make bookings on behalf
of their users, and they make money by charging a commission fee to suppliers. The
precise fee can vary significantly from service to service, but is generally a percentage
of the amount paid by the customer

6
A growing number of FITs (Fully Independent Travellers) those people who
plan and booked their own trip are turning to online travel agents (OTAs), because
companies function as a kind of ‘one stop shop’, allowing them to easily search for
hotels, read reviews, and compare prices.

3. Tour Operator

A tour operator packages all or most of the components of an offered trip and
then sells them to the traveller. Tour operators work closely with hotels,
transportation providers, and attractions in order to purchase large volumes of each
component and package these at a better rate than the traveller could if
purchasing individually.

Tour operators may be inbound, outbound, or receptive:

• Inbound tour operators bring travellers into a country as a group or through

individual tour packages (e.g., a package from Korea to visit Philippines).
• Outbound tour operators work within a country to take travellers to other
countries (e.g., a package from Philippines to the United Kingdom).
• Receptive tour operators (RTOs) are not travel agents, and they do not operate
the tours. They represent the various products of tourism suppliers to tour
operators in other markets in a business-to-business (B2B) relationship.
Receptive tour operators are key to selling packages to overseas markets
(Destination BC, 2014) and creating awareness around possible product.

4. Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs)

They are typically part of a political branch or subdivision in charge of promoting a

specific destination and enticing and servicing MICE travel. DMOs promote the
long-term development and marketing of a destination, focusing on convention sales,
tourism marketing and service.

5. Other Systems and Organization

These are specialty organizations that deal on certain specialty of tour. As you
can see, nowadays travel services range from online to personal, and leisure to
business applications. Now you have the general sense of components of travel
services.

Career Opportunities in Travel

cruising, destination promotion, airport operations, theme parks – all these
