Network
This procedure is intended for Dell EMC Service Personnel who are assisting customers on an ECS appliance in a single or
multirack VDC, as they:
● Deploy SSD cache disks
● Replace SSD cache disks
● Replace HDD or NVMe data disks
This procedure supports access to the ECS UI using a back-end, private network on ECS Gen2 or Gen3 EX Series.
For Gen2, go to Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen2 Series appliance on page 6.
For Gen3 EX Series, go to Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen3 EX Series appliance on page 7.
Topics:
• Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen2 Series appliance
• Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen3 EX Series appliance
• Install or Upgrade Service Console
• Generate the Cluster.ini file
• Use ECS Service Console to enable ECS UI access
• Use ECS Service Console to disable ECS UI access

Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen2 Series

appliance
Access an ECS Gen2 U or D series rack using the 192.168.219.x network from a laptop.

Connect a service laptop to U or D series rack

Access the ECS rack using the private (192.168.219.xxx) network from a laptop.

Prerequisites
● Access to private network IP addresses (192.168.219.1 to 24 and 192.168.219.101 to 124) are limited to the nodes connected
in the rack to the 1 GbE management switch.
● Private.4 (NAN) network IP addresses (169.254.x.x) of all nodes in all racks in the ECS VDC are accessible from any node.
Access is obtained once you SSH in to a node using a private IP address (192.168.219.x).
● If security lock down is not enabled, access to public network IP addresses for all ECS racks is available once you SSH in to
one of the ECS nodes.

Steps
1. If cabinet contains a service shelf, open the shelf and connect the network cable (red) to the service laptop.
2. From the rear of the rack, locate the 1 GbE private switch network ports by opening the rear door.
3. On the 1 GbE (turtle) switch, attach a network cable from the laptop to port 24 on the switch.
If port 24 is occupied, then disconnect port 50 network cable (white) temporarily and attach the network cable from the
service laptop.

Overview
This guide provides information for ECS Gen3 EX Series and Gen2 U Series disk replacement.
For all other ECS hardware platforms, contact Dell support to perform disk replacement.
ECS supports disk replacement using the process that is described in this document only if all nodes in the Virtual Data Center
(VDC) are running ECS version 3.5 or later.
ECS supports NVMe SSDs on the ECS EXF900 Appliance on ECS version 3.6 and later.
ECS supports HDDs on the ECS EX5000, EX500, EX300, EX3000, and Gen2 U Series Appliances on version 3.5 and later.
ECS blocks disk replacement by the user in the ECS UI until upgrade to version 3.5 or later is completed on all nodes. For
assistance carrying out a disk replacement while upgrade is in progress if for some reason deemed absolutely required, contact
Dell Support.
Throughout this document, in the context of these procedures, the following terms are used interchangeably:
● disk

Steps
1. In the ECS UI, go to Manage > Maintenance.
This section represents all the racks that exist in a VDC and all nodes.
The Data Disks column provides HDD status and NVMe SSD status. The SSD Cache Disks column provides read cache
SSD status.
Green means that disks are operating properly.
Yellow means that disks are undergoing recovery or initializing after replacement. No action is required.
Red means that disks require attention; for example, they have failed recovery.
Blue means that disks require your action; for example, you must replace the disks.
When the disk status turns to yellow, it means that the disk status is Suspect or Bad, and that ECS automatically had begun
the recovery process. The screen capture below shows the number of disks in yellow status:

Figure 1. ECS UI Maintenance Data Disks Yellow Status

2. Click the node for additional information.

The ECS Maintenance page for the rack appears and shows the status for each node.

Overview 11

Figure 2. ECS UI Maintenance Rack and Node Status

ECS automatically refreshes the page every 30 seconds. You can also manually refresh as applicable.
Note the following information:
● Depending on the disk size, the system load, and the amount of data on the disk, the disk recovery process may take up
to 48 hours.
● A disk may take at least 2 hours to recover, even if it does not have user data.
● A disk may seem to make no disk recovery progress for 2 hours at the beginning or at the end of recovery.
These delays are normal operation.
When the disk recovery is complete, the disk status turns to blue and Replace becomes available for that disk. The screen
capture below shows that the number of disks that previously were in yellow status are now in blue status:

Figure 3. ECS UI Maintenance Data Disks Blue Status

The ECS UI Maintenance drill-down for that node appears. The Replace option becomes available.

12 Overview

Figure 4. ECS UI Maintenance Node Drill-Down Replace

When the Replace option becomes available, a Secure Remote Services Dial Home event automatically instructs Dell EMC
to send a new disk to your site. You must have Secure Remote Services that are enabled for automatic shipment of
replacement disks to occur.

3. Proceed with physical disk replacement step only when you have the replacement disk available for physical replacement.
● If you do not have the replacement disks at hand, contact Dell Support and ensure that the replacement disk has
been ordered. Replacement Disk Prerequisites for ECS 3.6 and Replacement Disk Prerequisites for ECS 3.5 provide
information.. Continue when you have the replacement disk.
● If you have the replacement disk at hand, select the node that requires the replacement disks, and that is in blue status.
4. Click Replace, and then click OK to confirm.
ECS allows replacing one disk at a time per node. After you click Replace for a given drive, you must place a new disk into
the node before proceeding with next disk. ECS does not allow you to select Replace for another until you insert the drive
for which you have already selected Replace.
5. Click OK.

Next steps
Go to the section specific to the hardware type of the target node for the steps to physically replace the target HDDs on your
type of ECS appliance.
Do not replace the disk physically unless corresponding Disk Status in the ECS UI shows Replace Disk and the Description
states: Replace the disk according to LED identity and Slot/Enclosure location. Ensure that you verify the serial
number of the disk that you remove from the system against the serial number that the UI displays.

Removing chassis from the front

Before servicing the EX5000, this procedure provides information about how and why to take caution when you pull out the
EX5000/XE7100 chassis from the front.

About this task

The four front-captured thumb screws on the EX5000/XE7100 servers do not fully disengage to allow extraction of the server.

Steps
1. Apply some pressure apply on the four-front captured thumb screws. You may need to pull the chassis out 5-6mm and then
unscrew the thumbscrews the rest of the way till they disengage.
WARNING: Ensure that all other EX5000 chassis are fully seated in the rack and not in their service
positions. Only one EX5000 can be pulled out to the service position at a time for safety.

2. Loosen as much as possible and pull on the server to disengage.

3. Pull the EX5000 server fully out to the service position.

Inserting chassis from front

After servicing the EX5000, this procedure provides information about how and why to take caution when you reinsert the
EX5000/XE7100 chassis from the front.

About this task

The front door will not close or open easily or properly if the servers are not fully installed. After closing the lid, you must slide
the unit gently into the NEMA rail and engage and tighten all 4 thumb screws.
NOTE: Ensure that the CMA and rear cables do not snag on anything while pushing the node back into the rack. If they
snag, they can bend and break.

Steps
1. Fully fasten and screw in the four front-captured thumb screws on the XE7100 servers.
If the front screws are not fully fastened to the rack, the servers stand out slightly and cause interference with the front
door.
2. Slightly lift the EX5000 server as you insert it to allow for full insertion.
If you do not lift the EX5000 server as you are inserting it, the weight of the EX5000 in the top-most position may catch the
lower edge of the bottom back-end switch above it as the server is returned back into the system after being fully extended.
A slight upward push on the front of the chassis avoids this catching.

Post—Disk Replacement Checks

Carry out visual inspections in the ECS hardware and software once all disks are replaced in a node to ensure that the disk
replacement is successful.

Steps
In the ECS UI, go to Manage > Maintenance.
The disk status should be Initializing and eventually turn to Healthy.
The disk may be blinking showing normal activity, but identification LED should no longer be blinking.

24 Replace the HDDs on the ECS EX5000 appliance

The Initializing process may take 10 to 15 minutes, depending on disk size and system load.
You can proceed with the next disk replacement while the previous disk is still Initializing. Ensure that you check on the previous
drives afterward.

Replace the Failed Drives Overview

ECS supports replacing one disk at a time per node.
Complete both the UI steps of clicking Replace, followed immediately by the physical replacement of one disk within a node
before you can follow same steps to replace another disk in the same node. Replace all disks that are ready for Replace in one
node, and then go on to the next node.
Ensure that the target disk that you plan to physically replace is in the appropriate status. Go to ECS UI Manage >
Maintenance and confirm that you click Replace for the target disk. Following ECS UI for Storage Disk Status and
Replacement Information provides information.
The ECS EX500 node LED blinks blue. The location of the nodes may vary. If they are in a Dell EMC rack or a third-party rack,
they may be behind front doors.
The disk status LED indicator is green. The rate of blinking is twice every 1 second, to identify the disk inside node for
replacement. After the new disk is inserted, the node and disk LED indicators stop blinking.
If the target disk is located in the back bay, corresponding to slots 12 through 23, you will not see that the target disk is blinking
until the back bay is exposed, later in the procedure.

Obtain Access to Drives

There are two options for accessing the drives in the EX500: Either open rack front door, or remove the front bezel, as
documented below.

Removing the Optional Front Bezel

The bezel may not be present in your system. If it is present, uninstall it.

Opening the Drive Bays

Prerequisites
Identify any LEDs on the front. If the target disk that you plan to replace is in slot number 0 through 11 (BP1), then it is in the
front bay, and need not be opened. Go to the next section "Uninstalling a hard drive." If the failed disk is in slot slots 12 through
23 (BP2), then it is in the second bay. The bay must be opened.
CAUTION: Drive bays should not be in service position for more than 10 minutes because of thermal concerns.
When the drive bay is open for more than 10 minutes, the cooling fans spin at a higher speed to provide extra
cooling to the system. Thus system health status changes from the normal to critical state, and system event
"The BP1 drive bay is kept open for an extended period of time" is logged.

The drive bays can be open for a maximum of 10 minutes. This 10 minute window allows enough time to complete
a full disk replacement with the drive bay remaining open. Once you close the drive bays, they must remain
closed for 20 minutes before they can be opened again. Ensure that you replace only one disk drive at a time.
If you must replace multiple disk drives and you do not have enough time to fully complete the replacement
process for all disk drives within the ten minute window, close the system and wait 20 minutes before replacing
the remaining disk drives.

Steps
1. If locked, unlock the drive bay lock that is located above the left release latch, by pushing it up.
2. Open the release latches of drive bay 1 and pull the drive bays out.

Pull the chassis out

About this task
To access the internal components, you must release and pull the chassis out of the cabinet. The chassis slides out of the
cabinet far enough for you to access its internal components and then locks on the rails in the service position so that
you cannot pull it out any farther. How the chassis is freed from the cabinet depends upon which configuration of securing
mechanism is installed on the instrument. The first configuration has orange self-locking latches above the enclosure latch
handles. The second configuration has captive shoulder screws which attach the chassis to the cabinet.
NOTE: If the locking latches do not easily pull out, push in on the drawer and verify all other DAE latch handles are not
dis-engaged and try again.

Steps
1. If your chassis has the orange self-locking latches above the node latch handles:
a. Disengage the self-lock latches by pulling them out from the chassis.
b. Using the orange enclosure latch handles, slowly pull the chassis out the cabinet.

Generally, you should not remove a disk unless its amber fault LED is on. Do not replace a faulted disk until you have a
replacement disk with the same part number available. As shown below, disks are arranged in five rows of twelve modules each.
The first (front) row is A, then B, C, D, E. In each row, the disk are numbered 0 through 11, left to right.

Steps
1. Locate the faulted disk that you are going to replace.
The faulted disk has an amber fault LED on its carrier.
2. Attach an ESD wristband to your wrist and the enclosure with the disks you are removing.
3. Push the disk orange release tab.
4. Lift the disk latch, and slowly pull the disk about 1 in (3 cm) from its slot.
The disk LED blinks amber.
5. Pull the disk straight out about 2 in (5 cm) from its slot.
6. After you remove the disk, go to ECS UI Manage > Maintenance and verify that the disk serial number matches the
number reported as replaced.
Following ECS UI for Storage Disk Status and Replacement Information provides information.
If the disk serial number does not match, immediately reinsert the disk into its original slot.
7. Place the disk on a static-free surface.

4. If there are any additional failed drives showing as Replace in ECS UI Manage > Maintenance, perform the replacement
of the next drive on this node. Step 3 of Following ECS UI for Storage Disk Status and Replacement Information provides
information.
Do not replace the next disk physically unless corresponding Disk Status in the ECS UI shows Replace Disk and Description
states: Replace the disk according to LED identity and Slot/Enclosure location. Ensure that you verify the serial
number of the disk that you remove from the system against the serial number that the UI displays.

Insert and Secure the Enclosure Chassis

About this task
The first configuration has orange self-locking latches above the enclosure latch handles. The second configuration has captive
shoulder screws above the enclosure latch handles which secure the chassis to the cabinet.

Steps
1. Use the orange enclosure latch handles to push the enclosure completely into the cabinet.
2. Based on enclosure latching configuration perform one of the following actions to secure the enclosure.
● Engage the two orange self-locking latches to secure the enclosure so it cannot slide back out of the cabinet.
● Align the two shoulder screws on each side with the mounting holes on the cabinet. Thread the shoulder screws into the
mounting holes and finger-tighten the shoulder screws.

The Initializing process may take 10 to 15 minutes, depending on disk size and system load.
You can proceed with the next disk replacement while the previous disk is still Initializing. Ensure that you check on the previous
drives afterward.
