Access ECS UI Using Back-End, Private
Network
This procedure is intended for Dell EMC Service Personnel who are assisting customers on an ECS appliance in a single or
multirack VDC, as they:
● Deploy SSD cache disks
● Replace SSD cache disks
● Replace HDD or NVMe data disks
This procedure supports access to the ECS UI using a back-end, private network on ECS Gen2 or Gen3 EX Series.
For Gen2, go to Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen2 Series appliance on page 6.
For Gen3 EX Series, go to Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen3 EX Series appliance on page 7.
Topics:
• Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen2 Series appliance
• Connect the service laptop to the ECS Gen3 EX Series appliance
• Install or Upgrade Service Console
• Generate the Cluster.ini file
• Use ECS Service Console to enable ECS UI access
• Use ECS Service Console to disable ECS UI access
Prerequisites
● Access to private network IP addresses (192.168.219.1 to 24 and 192.168.219.101 to 124) are limited to the nodes connected
in the rack to the 1 GbE management switch.
● Private.4 (NAN) network IP addresses (169.254.x.x) of all nodes in all racks in the ECS VDC are accessible from any node.
Access is obtained once you SSH in to a node using a private IP address (192.168.219.x).
● If security lock down is not enabled, access to public network IP addresses for all ECS racks is available once you SSH in to
one of the ECS nodes.
Steps
1. If cabinet contains a service shelf, open the shelf and connect the network cable (red) to the service laptop.
2. From the rear of the rack, locate the 1 GbE private switch network ports by opening the rear door.
3. On the 1 GbE (turtle) switch, attach a network cable from the laptop to port 24 on the switch.
If port 24 is occupied, then disconnect port 50 network cable (white) temporarily and attach the network cable from the
service laptop.
Figure 1. Locate port 24 on the private 1 GbE switch
4. Set the network interface on the laptop to the static address 192.168.219.99, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, with no gateway
required.
5. Verify that the temporary network between the laptop and rack's private management network is functioning by using the
ping command.
NOTE: If 192.168.219.1 does not answer, try 192.168.219.2. If neither responds, verify the laptop IP/subnet mask,
network connection, and switch port connection. If the service laptop is connected to Dell's VPN, ping to 192.168.219.x
may not return a response.

This guide provides information for ECS Gen3 EX Series and Gen2 U Series disk replacement.
For all other ECS hardware platforms, contact Dell support to perform disk replacement.
ECS supports disk replacement using the process that is described in this document only if all nodes in the Virtual Data Center
(VDC) are running ECS version 3.5 or later.
ECS supports NVMe SSDs on the ECS EXF900 Appliance on ECS version 3.6 and later.
ECS supports HDDs on the ECS EX5000, EX500, EX300, EX3000, and Gen2 U Series Appliances on version 3.5 and later.
ECS blocks disk replacement by the user in the ECS UI until upgrade to version 3.5 or later is completed on all nodes. For
assistance carrying out a disk replacement while upgrade is in progress if for some reason deemed absolutely required, contact
Dell Support.
Throughout this document, in the context of these procedures, the following terms are used interchangeably:
● disk

10 Overview
Steps
1. In the ECS UI, go to Manage > Maintenance.
This section represents all the racks that exist in a VDC and all nodes.
The Data Disks column provides HDD status and NVMe SSD status. The SSD Cache Disks column provides read cache
SSD status.
Green means that disks are operating properly.
Yellow means that disks are undergoing recovery or initializing after replacement. No action is required.
Red means that disks require attention; for example, they have failed recovery.
Blue means that disks require your action; for example, you must replace the disks.
When the disk status turns to yellow, it means that the disk status is Suspect or Bad, and that ECS automatically had begun
the recovery process. The screen capture below shows the number of disks in yellow status:
Overview 11
Figure 2. ECS UI Maintenance Rack and Node Status
ECS automatically refreshes the page every 30 seconds. You can also manually refresh as applicable.
Note the following information:
● Depending on the disk size, the system load, and the amount of data on the disk, the disk recovery process may take up
to 48 hours.
● A disk may take at least 2 hours to recover, even if it does not have user data.
● A disk may seem to make no disk recovery progress for 2 hours at the beginning or at the end of recovery.
These delays are normal operation.
When the disk recovery is complete, the disk status turns to blue and Replace becomes available for that disk. The screen
capture below shows that the number of disks that previously were in yellow status are now in blue status:
The ECS UI Maintenance drill-down for that node appears. The Replace option becomes available.
12 Overview
Figure 4. ECS UI Maintenance Node Drill-Down Replace
When the Replace option becomes available, a Secure Remote Services Dial Home event automatically instructs Dell EMC
to send a new disk to your site. You must have Secure Remote Services that are enabled for automatic shipment of
replacement disks to occur.
3. Proceed with physical disk replacement step only when you have the replacement disk available for physical replacement.
● If you do not have the replacement disks at hand, contact Dell Support and ensure that the replacement disk has
been ordered. Replacement Disk Prerequisites for ECS 3.6 and Replacement Disk Prerequisites for ECS 3.5 provide
information.. Continue when you have the replacement disk.
● If you have the replacement disk at hand, select the node that requires the replacement disks, and that is in blue status.
4. Click Replace, and then click OK to confirm.
ECS allows replacing one disk at a time per node. After you click Replace for a given drive, you must place a new disk into
the node before proceeding with next disk. ECS does not allow you to select Replace for another until you insert the drive
for which you have already selected Replace.
5. Click OK.
Next steps
Go to the section specific to the hardware type of the target node for the steps to physically replace the target HDDs on your
type of ECS appliance.
Do not replace the disk physically unless corresponding Disk Status in the ECS UI shows Replace Disk and the Description
states: Replace the disk according to LED identity and Slot/Enclosure location. Ensure that you verify the serial
number of the disk that you remove from the system against the serial number that the UI displays.

Figure 20. System cover installation
Steps
1. Fully fasten and screw in the four front-captured thumb screws on the XE7100 servers.
If the front screws are not fully fastened to the rack, the servers stand out slightly and cause interference with the front
door.
2. Slightly lift the EX5000 server as you insert it to allow for full insertion.
If you do not lift the EX5000 server as you are inserting it, the weight of the EX5000 in the top-most position may catch the
lower edge of the bottom back-end switch above it as the server is returned back into the system after being fully extended.
A slight upward push on the front of the chassis avoids this catching.

Removing a Faulted Disk
About this task
Generally, you should not remove a disk unless its amber fault LED is on. Do not replace a faulted disk until you have a
replacement disk with the same part number available. As shown below, disks are arranged in five rows of twelve modules each.
The first (front) row is A, then B, C, D, E. In each row, the disk are numbered 0 through 11, left to right.
CL4749
Steps
1. Locate the faulted disk that you are going to replace.
The faulted disk has an amber fault LED on its carrier.
2. Attach an ESD wristband to your wrist and the enclosure with the disks you are removing.
3. Push the disk orange release tab.
4. Lift the disk latch, and slowly pull the disk about 1 in (3 cm) from its slot.
The disk LED blinks amber.
5. Pull the disk straight out about 2 in (5 cm) from its slot.
6. After you remove the disk, go to ECS UI Manage > Maintenance and verify that the disk serial number matches the
