Fodb SW 2 1

This document contains a summary of exam questions for a fundamentals of deformable bodies course. The exam contains 5 questions related to determining displacements, stresses, and torques in steel rods, pressure vessels, tubes, shafts, and bolt couplings given information like material properties, forces, dimensions, and allowable stresses. Students are asked to calculate things like the displacement of end C for a loaded steel rod, the maximum internal pressure for a cylindrical pressure vessel, the inner diameter of a steel tube transmitting power, the angle of twist for a loaded steel shaft, and the torque capacity of a flanged bolt coupling.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES

SW 1

NAME: SET:
COURSE: DATE:
YEAR AND SET: SCORE:

1. The 30-mm-diameter A992 steel rod is subjected to the loading shown. Determine the
displacement of end C. (E = 200 GPa)

2. A cylindrical pressure vessel is fabricated from steel plating that has a thickness of 20 mm. The
diameter of the pressure vessel is 450 mm, and its length is 2 m. Determine the maximum internal
pressure that can be applied if the longitudinal stress is limited to 140 MPa and the
circumferential stress is limited to 60 MPa.

3. A steel tube having an outer diameter of 2.5 in is used to transmit 9 hp when turning at 27 rpm.
Determine the inner diameter of the tube if the allowable shear stress is 10 ksi.

4. The 20-mm-diameter A-36 steel shaft is subjected to the torques shown. Determine the angle of
twist of the end B. (E = 200 GPa)

5. A flanged bolt coupling consists of 10 steel ½ in diameter bolts spaced evenly around a bolt circle
14 in. in diameter. Determine the torque capacity of the coupling if the allowable shearing stress
in the bolts is 6000 psi.
