𝑡𝑡 2 = 802 + 3202 − 2(80)(320) 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 20
𝑡𝑡 2 = 6,400 + 102,400 − 51,200(0.9397)
𝑡𝑡 2 = 108,800 − 48,112.94
√𝑡𝑡 = √60,684.36
𝑡𝑡 = 246.34

Therefore, after flying the place off course the plane is 246.3km away from Dryden Ontario

8. On a merry-go-round, each horse moves up and down. The height of the rider, h(t), in
metres, at time t, in seconds, is given by the equation ℎ (t) = -1.5 cos (6t) + 2

& the minimum height
Minimum value will be about 0.5m
C–a

b) How long does it take the rider to complete one full cycle? (2 marks)
3600 3600
Period: k=6 = 60

Therefore, it will take about 60 secs to complete one full cycle

c) What would be the height of the rider at 15 seconds? (2 marks)

T = 15

ℎ (t) = -1.5 cos (6t) + 2

ℎ (t) = -1.5 cos (6(15)) + 2
ℎ (t) = 2m

THINKING
11. Sarah is standing 12 metres from the base of a tower. The angle of elevation to the top
of the tower is 38°. The angle of elevation from Seth, who is standing 8 metres
from Sarah, is 63°. Sarah, Seth and the tower are not in line with each other. If you
were standing at the base of the tower, what would be the angle between Sarah and
Seth?

Include a clear, well-labelled diagram in your solution and explain your thought process. Give
final answer to the nearest degree. (4 marks)
