2. Nick meets Gatsby, though he does not know him at first.
3. Nick details his everyday life and the budding relationship with Jordan

2. What is special about Gatsby's parties?

• people go there without any invitation; apart from Nick

• Gatsby's parties are situated in his gigantic gothic mansion
• Huge amounts of alcohol; excessive amounts of food
• The guests do not actually know Gatsby -> romors
• The host does not actively take part in his party, he seems to be distant from the others

3. List rumors that surround Gatsby. Why are there so many rumors about
him?

him from those who had found little that it was necessary to whisper about in this world"
(35, 30ff.)

4. Why might "Owl Eyes" expect the books in the library to be fake?
What does it tell us about people's opinion of Gatsby?

The vast library suggests wealth, he is probably a learned scholar

People seem to think it is all facade; that it is all to good to be true;
However the pages of the books are uncut, which means the books have not been read.

5. Description of the party. A look at language.

p. 33, ll. 3 - 13
6. Study pp. 132 - 133 and define the narrator of the Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is told from the first-person point of view and by a narrator called Nick Carraway.

He has a limited point of view as his perspective is limited to what he sees and experiences and
everything is filtered through his own view. Nick is new to this world and we get to know it from his
experiences.

As a consequence, the reader is strongly involved and identifies with the narrator and we have to be
aware that his discription is subjective

Such a narrator is unreliable as the reader cannot be sure whether Nick's perception is always true
7. Explain these lines: p. 43, ll. 22 - 25

When Nick goes home after the party, he sees Gatsby standing on the porch: "A sudden emptiness
seemed to flow from the windows and the great doors, endowing with complete isolation the figure of
the host, who stood on the porch, his hand up in a formal gesture of farewell." p. 43, ll. 22ff.
• Gatsby is a mysterious character
• For some reason he is interested in Nick, seems to need him
• Lonely personality
• Stresses the fact that he is "absent" from his parties
