3c More Equations

This document provides practice problems involving chemical equations. It includes word and balanced equations for reactions between elements, acids and bases, and displacement reactions. Students are asked to write word and balanced equations for reactions such as: hydrogen and chlorine yielding hydrogen chloride; potassium carbonate and hydrochloric acid yielding potassium chloride, carbon dioxide, and water; and magnesium and copper(II) sulfate yielding magnesium sulfate and copper.

Questions:
1. Write word equations for the reaction between the following elements:
a. hydrogen and chlorine  (1)
b. sodium and fluorine  (1)
c. magnesium and oxygen  (1)
d. hydrogen and oxygen  (1)

2. Here are three general reactions which you met in Year 9. -

alkali + acid  salt + water
metal + acid  salt + hydrogen
metal carbonate + acid  salt + carbon dioxide + water

Complete these word equations:

a. sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid  (2)
b. sodium carbonate + sulphuric acid  (2)
c. magnesium + hydrochloric acid  (2)
d. calcium hydroxide + nitric acid  (2)

3. Write balanced equations for these word equations ( remember that you need to
write the correct formula for each substance first before balancing):

a. potassium carbonate + hydrochloric acid  potassium chloride + carbon dioxide + water (3)

b. sodium hydroxide + sulphuric acid  sodium sulphate + water (3)

c. zinc + sulphuric acid  zinc(II)sulphate + hydrogen
