04 AC Parallel Resonance

A parallel resonant circuit draws a minimum current at resonance. This occurs when the impedance of the inductive and capacitive elements are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign, causing them to cancel out. At this resonant frequency, the circuit acts as a pure resistor. Several example problems are given that involve calculating the resonant frequency of RLC parallel circuits and determining component values needed for resonance and minimum current.

AC Parallel Resonance

06 EE2 Parallel Resonance (Without Solution)

NOTE!!!
Current at resonance is minimum, hence such a circuit (used in radio work) is sometimes
called REJECTOR CIRCUIT, because it rejects (take minimum current) that frequency to
which it resonates. This resonance is often referred to as CURRENT RESONANCE also
because current circulating between the two branches is many times greater than the line
current taken from the supply.

Sample Problems:
1. A coil of 10Ω resistance and 0.1H inductance is connected in parallel with a capacitor of 100
µF capacitance. Calculate the frequency at which the circuit will act as non-inductive
resistance. Find the value of that resistance.
2. An inductive circuit of resistance 2Ω and inductance of 0.01H is connected to a 250V, 50Hz
supply. What capacitance placed in parallel will produce resonance. Find I T and current in
the branch circuit.
3.

Find the value of the single unknown element that is connected in parallel so that the
current drawn will be minimum.

4. A 20,000 cycle source is connected to a series circuit consisting of a 50Ω resistor and a
0.266µF capacitor. An impedance coil, whose resistance and inductance are 25Ω and
0.191mH respectively, is then connected in series with a variable resistor will the entire
circuit be in resonance.
5.

6. Find the resonant frequency for the two branch parallel circuit.

7. Given:

All connected in parallel supplied from 200V, 60Hz source.

If a single element is connected in parallel to the circuit so that the circuit will act as non-
inductive resistance element. Find also the power, current, and total resistance of the
circuit.

8. Given the following loads of a parallel circuit 10A, 0.8pf lag, 5.2A, 0.65pf lead, 12A, resistive.
If the circuit is supplied by a 120V, 50Hz. Find the element to be connected in parallel with
the circuit so as the circuit will draw minimum current. Find the dynamic impedance, power
and current in the circuit.
