This lesson will discuss the importance of Electrical fires—fires directly caused by the
flow of electric current or by static electricity, one of the important types of structure fires. The
subsequent development of an electrical fire is generally no different than that of any other type of
structural fire. But the mechanisms leading to ignition of an electrical fire are, in many cases,
It is necessary to explain what an “electrical fire” is. It is not simply a fire originating
in a device powered by electricity. If this were the case, then a fire caused by overheating cooking
oil on an electric hob would be an electrical fire, which it is not. Instead, an electrical fire is a fire
directly caused by the flow of electric current or by static electricity.

3 DRAWINGS AND PLANS
WHAT’S IN?
This lesson deals with the electrical symbols serve as a drawing or pictograms that
represent electrical devices in an electrical diagram or plan. Sign provide warning from electrical
hazard or in danger. Electrical Diagrams and Plans represent the graphical connection of the circuit.

WHAT’S NEW?

Electrical symbol are small drawings or

pictograms used to represent various electrical
devices in a diagram or plan of an electrical
circuit. These symbols are use in sketching
schematic diagrams and electrical plans for
numerous types of electrical works. Practically
any electrical fixture found in a house has a
symbol that coincides

Electrical signs and stickers alert students, workers, and

visitors to electrical hazards in the area. Alerting workers to
high voltage areas, electrical hazards, power lines and other
electrical equipment in the area can help prevent fires and
injuries. Proper electrical signs can inform workers of the
dangers in the area.
Caution – indicates some precautionary measures against
potential hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may
result in minor or moderate injury s of the dangers in the
area.

WHAT IS IT?

Safety Alert – indicates that a person should observe extra

awareness

Danger – specifies hazardous situation which, if not avoided,

will result in serious injury or even death.

Prohibition – means that any activity stated by the symbol is

not allowed.

Warning – specifies a potentially hazardous situation which, if

not avoided, could result in serious injury or even death.

Electrical Hazard – indicates that electrical hazard is present in

the area.

A push button is a simple type of switch that controls an action

in a machine or some type of process..

A transformer is an electrical device which, by the principles

of electromagnetic induction, transfers electrical energy from
one electric circuit to another, without changing the frequency

An electrolytic capacitor is a polarized capacitor whose anode

or positive plate is made of a metal that forms an insulating
oxide layer through anodization. This oxide layer acts as the
dielectric of the capacitor.
In a wye configuration, one end of each of the three windings is
connected to form a neutral. A phase is connected to the other
end of the three windings. The neutral is usually grounded.

Delta-star connected transformers are widely used in low

power distribution with the primary windings providing a three-
wire balanced load to the utility company while the secondary
windings provide the required 4th-wire neutral or earth
connection.

Smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an

indicator of fire. Commercial security devices issue a signal to a
fire alarm control panel as part of a fire alarm system,

Fire alarm panel is the controlling component of a fire alarm

system. The panel receives information from devices designed
to detect and report fires, monitors their operational integrity
and provides for automatic control of equipment, and
transmission of information necessary to prepare the facility for
fire based on a predetermined sequence.

A manual call point is a device which enables personnel to

raise an alarm in the event of a fire incident by pressing a
frangible element to activate the alarm system. A fire alarm call
point should be installed at a height of 1.4m above floor level at
easily accessible and conspicuous positions.

Siren is an output device used in fire alarm panel

An induction single phase motor or asynchronous motor is an

AC electric motor in which the electric current in the rotor
needed to produce torque is obtained by electromagnetic
induction from the magnetic field of the stator winding.

GUIDED ACTIVITY 2
Identification: Read the statement carefully
and identify what is being described or defined.
Write your answer in your notebook.
1. It only used a single line to represent connections of outlets and receptacles.
2. It is a graphical presentation of electrical wiring connections to install in a house or
building.
3. It is a circuit in which lamp are connected across the wires. The voltage across each
load is the same.
4. It is a complete flow of current in the circuit or when the circuit is switched ON.
5. It is a condition of the circuit when total current flowing in the circuit is more than the
current capacity or ampacity of the conductor or the branch circuit.
GUIDED ASSESSMENT 2
Multiple Choice: Read each statement carefully.
Then, Write the letter of the correct answer on your notebook.
Use capital letter and erasures are considered wrong.

1. Lisa touches the body of their oven toaster and she got shock. What is the problem of their
oven toaster?
