Origin of Carnival

● Carnival is a celebration held before


the Christian observance of Lent.
● During Lent, people traditionally
refrain from throwing parties or
holding other celebrations, and
abstain from eating meat and other
rich foods for a period of forty days.

● Carnival is celebrated over a number of


days and is typically used to bid farewell
to the pleasures we are so used to
having;
● the word 'carnival' even means 'farewell to
meat'.

When is it held?
When is it held?
● In Rio, Brazil, Carnival is held over the course of four
days before Ash Wednesday.

● The celebration is marked by the lavish parades, parties,


costumes and foods that the participants purchase.

● During Carnival, most stores and businesses are shut


down in order to have everyone participate in the
occasion. The only stores open and profiting are ones
that directly contribute to the celebrations.

● During Carnival, much money is


spent and many goods are
consumed, as it is (and is meant to
be) a very materialistic celebration.
● Ground costumes start at US$ 250
and can cost as much as US$ 650.
Float costumes vary between US$
1,200’s to $ 6,000’s.
● The purpose of this is to wow the
entire country and join everyone
together in festivity.

romantic form of samba known as
samba-canção.
● Carmen Miranda-sang in this form,
embodied the exuberant culture of

● Originated from Maxixe- aka Brazilian


tango
● Commonly recognized because females
dress in elaborate costumes and sensually
sway their hips to the beat of the drums
● Characterized as joyful, flirty, and
exuberant
● In Rio Carnival, Samba music blasts
throughout the streets. Both the street
dancers and the performers alike dance the
samba in celebration of the event.
