SUBJECT : PHYSICS
Class : XI Time Allowed: 3hours
Maximum Marks: 70

General Instructions:
(1) All questions are compulsory. There are 35 questions in all.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
(3) Section A contains fifteen MCQs and three assertion reasoning questions of 1 mark each,
Section B contains seven short answer questions of 2 marks each, Section C contains five
short answer questions of 3 marks each, Section D contains three long answer questions of 5
marks each and Section E contains two case based study questions of 4 marks each.
(4) There is no overall choice. However internal choice is provided. You have to attempt only one
of the choices in such questions.

19. Establish the relation between angular momentum and moment of inertia of a rigid
body.
OR
Prove that the rate of change of angular momentum of a body is equal to the torque
acting on it.
20. A bullet of mass 10 g is fired from a gun of mass 8 kg with a velocity 160 ms-1.
Find the velocity of recoil of the gun.Find also the force required to stop the
gun in a distance of 25 cm.
21. Obtain expression for rms velocity of gas molecules in terms of temperature.
OR
Calculate the r.m.s velocity of a gas at 300 K given its molecular mass = 32 g and
R = 8.3 J/mol K.
22. The speed time graph of a particle moving along a fixed direction is shown in the
figure. Obtain the distance travelled by the particle from t = 0 sec to t = 10 sec.
What is the average speed of the particle over this interval.

23. Mention the postulates of Kinetic theory of gases.
24. Derive a relation for the optimum velocity of negotiating a curve by a body in a
banked curve.
25. Explain the terms 'impulsive force' and impulse.

Three mark questions:-
26. State the law of conservation of energy. Illustrate the law in the case
of a freely falling body.
27. State Pascal’s law and explain how is it applied to hydraulic lift with the help of a
diagram?
28. Velocity of sound in air at 289 K is 340 m/s. What will be the velocity if the
pressure is doubled and the temperature is raised to 324 K?
OR
Explain Laplace correction to Newtons formula for velocity of sound in a gas.
How does the velocity of sound vary with (i) Temperature (ii) Pressure.
29. The frequency ν of a stretched string may depend on (i) length of the
vibrating segment l, (ii) the tension in the string F and
(iii) the mass per unit length m. Obtain an expression for frequency
by dimensional method.
30. A rope of negligible mass is wound round a hollow cylinder of mass 3 kg and
radius 40 cm.What is the angular acceleration of the cylinder if the rope is pulled
with a force of 30 N? What is the linear acceleration of the rope?
OR
To maintain a rotor at a uniform angular speed of 200 rad s-1, an engine needs to
transmit a torque of 180 Nm. What is the power required by the engine?

Five mark questions:-

31. Derive expressions for the kinetic and potential energies of a harmonic oscillator.
Hence show that total energy is conserved in SHM.Draw a graph to show variation
of energy with distance.

Explain various modes of vibration of air column in open and closed pipes.
Show that a closed pipe can produce only odd harmonics whereas an open
pipe produces all harmonics.
32. What is meant by a projectile? Derive the expression for time of flight, maximum
height and range of a projectile.
OR
State parallelogram law of vector addition and obtain the expression for resultant
vector using analytical method. Also find the direction in terms of angle.
33. Define terminal velocity. Derive an expression for the terminal velocity in case of
a sphere falling through a viscous fluid such as glycerine.
OR
State and prove Bernoulli’s theorem. Give two applications of Bernoulli’s
theorem.

Section – E
Questions 34 and 35 are Case Study based questions and are compulsory. Each
question carries 4 marks.

34. Thermometer
Temperature of a body is expressed as a number. To obtain the number

it is necessary to construct a scale of temperature and an instrument

on which such a scale is employed. Such an instrument is known as

a thermometer. The scale chosen must precise, consistent and accurate.

There are three important temperature scales commonly used.

1. At what temperature do the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales coincide?
2. Which liquid is used in clinical thermometer?
3. Temperature of the human body is 98.40F.Find the corresponding
temperature of the Celsius and Kelvin Scale.
OR
If the change of temperature of a body is 200C, find the change of
temperature of the body in Fahrenheit scale.

35. Satellites
A satellite is a body which is constantly revolving in an orbit around a planet.
Some planets of the solar system have natural satellites orbiting them.
The moon is the natural satellite of the earth. Geostationary satellites
are artificial satellites orbiting the earth so that their period is same with
that of the earth. The orbit in which they are staying is called parking orbit.
Such satellites are used for communication purposes.
