Assignment 1

This document contains 7 questions related to highway engineering. Question 1 asks about the impact speed of a car hitting a fallen tree based on sight distance limitations. Question 2 asks about determining the sensitivity of passing sight distance to various parameters. Question 3 asks about calculating safe following distances between vehicles. Question 4 asks about the minimum sight distance required to perform an overtaking maneuver. Question 5 asks about identifying reasons for a crash based on sight distances. Question 6 asks about factors affecting road alignment in plain and hilly areas. Question 7 provides vehicle speeds and asks about determining the road gradient and accident location using principles of motion.

CE3015: Highway Engineering

Assignment 1

1. In a highway with a design speed of 100 kmph, there exists a location where because of a
combination of a horizontal and a vertical curve, drivers will not be able to see beyond 140
m. If there is a fallen tree right after the 140 m sight distance, what would be the impact
speed of a car travelling at the design speed with the tree? What should be the advisory
speed at the location?
2. Determine the sensitivity of the passing sight distance to changes in:
i. The relative speed of the impeding vehicle.
ii. The clearance between the overtaking and impeding vehicle
iii. The clearance between the overtaking and oncoming vehicle
iv. The length of the overtaking vehicle
v. The length of the impeding vehicle
vi. The deceleration capacity of the overtaking vehicle.
Take a design speed of 80 kmph and values for other parameters as used in the AASHTO
Green book or the paper by Glennon. You can use a spreadsheet application for this purpose.
3. Two cars are following a lead car which itself is travelling at a speed 𝑣. If the reaction times
of the drivers of the following vehicles are 𝑡𝑟 and the length of each car is 𝐿, determine the
safe following distance for each of the following cars. Assume the reaction time of the lead
car is 𝑡𝑟0 and the coefficient of braking friction for all cars is 𝑓. Please note that the
following cars will know to slow down or stop only after they see the brake lights of the car
before them.
4. Suppose you are driving on a 2-lane-2-way district road in the state of Telangana. While
driving at the design speed, you found a slow-moving vehicle in front of you, and you
decided to overtake the same. However, another set of vehicles is coming from the opposite
direction where the same condition persists i.e. fast-moving vehicle seems to overtake the
slow-moving vehicle. What should be the minimum sight distance available for performing
the overtaking maneuver?
5. Suppose you are an investigator who is asked to identify and quantify the reasons for a crash
that happened between two vehicles coming from opposite directions. Outline at least 4
different fundamental reasons (by giving suitable examples and quantification) assuming
that the sight distance for stopping the vehicle at the location of the accident was enough for
normal scenarios.
6. Outline and discuss briefly the dominating factors affecting the alignment of a road both in
plain and hilly areas. (open-ended question)
7. There are two vehicles, A and B, travelling in opposite directions with speeds of 60 Km/hr
and 80 Km/hr, respectively. The gradient of the road is 𝑛%. After seeing each other, the
drivers of each vehicle applied brakes immediately; the distance between the vehicles at the
time of the application of brakes was 115 m. Consider a scenario where Vehicle A could stop
after applying the brakes, but Vehicle B could not do so and crashed into Vehicle A. The
impact speed at the time of the collision was 10 km/hr. Determine the gradient of the road.
Also, determine the location at which the accident took place (in terms of distance from their
initial positions). (Hint: You can apply the work-energy principle and/or use laws of motion)
