EEN Variable Speed Fluid Coupling CS5130E Save energy in pumps and fans! Model HCLVIntroduction Is your rotary machinery (pumps, fans and the like) being operated at full capacity? If so, why not consider using equipment that will make their operation more efficient. If many machines have a small but unneeded extra power requirement, the total annual power cost for all the machines will add up to a large sum of money, even though the individ- ual extra power requirements are small. Usually, the flow and pressure of pumps and fans are controlled by means of valves and bypasses, or in some cases pumps or fans are arranged in parallel to cope with large loads. However, a speed control system is much more efficient than these methods and can achieve considerable savings in electric power. The ideal equipment for speed control is the EBARA Variable Speed Fluid Coupling. EBARA has sold a great many of these couplings, which are now in use in many fields of industry and have received much praise as energy-saving devices. Contents Introduction 1 Features 2 Ee ee a 1. Stepless speed control aver a wide speed range Won combined with an inexpensiva constant-sped type squire! cage motor the EBARA fd coupling prowdes stepieas contol of the apeed of the diven ‘machine (pump ot fan This is achioved by using Socon tube to increase or decrease the amount of ot ina the fluid coupling, Speed control range 100%-25% in the case of parabolic torque characteristics) Reduced Motor Costs Wihon starting fan which has lage inertia, te ol evel ofthe EBARA fluid coupling can be reduces almost fo Ze10 by setting the so0op tube inthe minimum speed boston. Aa a result, the motor can be stated under near-roro load conditions. This permits the use of an inexpensive squirel-cage motor Easy Maintenance ‘The EBARA Fluid Coupling tenamits power through a flat urbe oi, and has no wearing art, in contrast toa varable speed clutch, Therefore, the fluid coupling is easy to matsin and inepect and i highy reliable. Cushion Effect Powers transmitted tough fu (urbe oi, 80 the Cushioning effect of the fluid absorbs vibrations end shocks fram the motor and the driven machine, provi ing smooth power transmission and greatly prolonging the service life of the machinory coupled by the cou Principles of speed regulation Inthe Variable Speed Fluid Coupling, the ol inside the fluid coupling’s vanes (impeller and runner) is increased o decreased, by means of a scoop tube, In order to change the transmission torque. In this way, the speed of the driven, machine is controlled. ‘As shown in Fig. 1, oil flowing into the vane is forced out to the ciccumferonca by the centrifugal force of the impeller. The oil flows along the circumference, and when it reaches the runner side, it causes the runner to rotate. In the scoop tube chamber, the oil is formed into a cylinctical layer by Centrifugal force, and this oil is scooped into the top end of 1M Fluid Coupling Operation (Fig. 1) sate se2op ube camber the the Clutch Function By adjusting tho volumo ofthe circulation ol the level ot the oll nsde the coupling can be reduced almost to zero. When this happens, the speed of the riven ‘machine can bo recived to loss than 10% of is rated Speed which means thatthe couping can also function asa clutch Higher Efficiency Powor transmission oss in the EBARA tid coupling ‘consists only of slp oss and bearing loss. This means itcan achieve effciency as high as 96 or 97% under rated conditions Simple Control The EBARA Fluid Coupling can be automatically contrlled by a 420mA conto! signal sent to the actuator Remote contro! can be easily aplied No Need for Auxiliary Power Supply The EBARA Fluid Coupling is equipped with a highly reliable geat-bype oil pump which does not recive & Special power Suppy Reduced Fan Maintenance Costs Wear of the fan vanes caused by dust increases propor tionally as the cube of the fen speed, 0 wear i reduced by applying speed contol This prolongs the owes lo of to vane scoop tube, The thickness of the oll layer depends on position of the scoop tube, In Fig. 13), the scoop tube has its port positioned near the axis of rotation, and the vanes aro filed with oll. With tho transmission torque maximized, the impeller-to-runner turn= Ing speed ratio vill reach a maximum of 0.97 or 0.98. Fig. 142) shows the scoop tube port moved to the circum- ference. The oil in the vanes is scooped up and reduced, land the transmission torque is minimized, with the ratio dropping to a minimum of 0.2 oF 0:3. Changing the position ff the scoop tube permits stepiess control of the driven machine. ote waratat 1X] (0 Tansmison Toque Masinizas a v7 \ (2) Transmssion Torque MinimizeFig. 2 shows the relation between transmission torque and the speed of the driven machine, when the scoop tube is in diferent positions, Curve (A) indicates the torque of @ turbo machine with parabolic torque characteristic, e.g, pump or fan, Curve (B) indicates the torque for a constant-orquo load.
