Basic Engineering Drawing

1. The document provides instructions for 6 drawing activities: dividing a line into equal segments, drawing a regular hexagon outside a circle, drawing a pentagon with 40mm sides, constructing an ellipse given its major and minor axes, inscribing a hexagon in a 65mm diameter circle, and drawing a trapezium with sides of specified lengths. 2. The first activity instructs how to divide a line into equal segments using a compass. The second describes how to construct a regular hexagon outside a given circle using tangent lines and 30-60-90 triangles. 3. The third explains construction of a pentagon with 40mm sides using intersecting circles and radii. The fourth gives the definition of

Drawing Activity

Follow the instructions and draw the activity on your drawing plates (divided into
6 parts)

#1 #2 #3

#4 #5 #6

# 1. DIVISION OF A LINE

Figure 1

. Given line AB(5 cms) and the number of equal divisions desired, say 5. Draw a
line AC at any angle. The line AC may be of any length. Now take any convenient
radius in the compass which can accommodate 5 distances on line AC . From A
mark the points on AC at points 1,2,3,4 and 5. Now, join the point 5 with B and
with the help of drafter or triangles draw the parallel lines from 4,3,2,1 parallel to
5-B, cutting the line AB at points 4’, 3’, 2’, 1’, which are required divisions of the
line AB.
# 2. REGULAR POLYGON
A regular polygon is a plane figure bounded by straight lines of equal length
and contain equal angles.
Drawing Activity

DRAW A REGULAR HEXAGON OUTSIDE A GIVEN CIRCLE

Figure 2

Referring to the figure, take any point O as center and draw a circle of given
radius , say 2.5 cms. Now draw two center lines vertically and horizontally from
point O. With a drafter draw two horizontal lines tangent to a circle such as 1-2
and 3-4. With the help of 30-60 degree triangle draw lines AF and BC tangent to
the circle and cutting the line 1-2 at points A and B and horizontal line at F and C.
Similar construction is repeated on the uppercase of centerline, cutting the line
3-. Now join all4 at E and D. Now join all the points A,B, C, D, E, F,which will form
the regular hexagon.

# 3. DRAW PENTAGON
Figure 3

Draw a pentagon having 40mm sides .

Drawing Activity

Draw a 40mm long line AB.

Set the compass to radius AB and draw a circle-1 and circle-2 with centers A and B
respectively. Let the circle-1and circle-2 intersect each other at points P and Q.
With P as center and same radius AB, draw an arc to intersect the circle-1 and
circle-2 at point R and S respectively.
Join RM and produce it to meet the circle-2 at point C.
Similarly, join SM and produce it to meet the circle-1 at point E.
With center C and E and radius AB, draw arcs to intersect each other at point D.
Join ABCDE to obtain the required pentagon.

# 4. ELLIPSE CONSTRUCTION
Figure 3

Given: major axis = 2 x 5cms =10cms

minor axis = 2 x 3cms = 6 cms
The long axis of an ellipse is the major axis and the short axis is the minor axis.
The foci E and F are found by striking arcs with radius equal to half the major axis
Drawing Activity

and with center at the end of the minor axis. Another method is to draw a
semicircle with the major axis as diameter, then to draw GH parallel to the major
axis and GE and HF parallel to the minor axis.

#5. Draw a 65 mm diameter circle (lightly) inscribe a hexagon.

#6. Draw a trapezium .with sides = 3,4,5 and 6 cms long
