LESSON 1: Technical Terms in Research

1. Abstract – A summary of the research paper


2. Analysis and Interpretation – An element of a research paper that allows you to
analyze data gathered
3. Citation – The act of acknowledging and documenting a reference source used
in preparing an assignment, report, or project
4. Data – A factual information used as basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation
5. Introduction – An element of a research paper that summarizes the goals of the
project including the problems and solutions you anticipate in encountering
6. Literature Review – The process of identifying and locating relevant sources of
information
7. Methodology – A particular set of procedures in a research investigation
8. Plagiarism – When you copy the exact words of another writer and claim it as your
own
9. Questionnaire – A research instrument consisting of a series of questions to gather
information from respondents
10. Reference Page – An alphabetical listing of sources in an APA citation
11. Research - A long formal essay, usually 15 pages in length, which presents the
student’s findings about a chosen topic
12. Research Problem - A problem that someone would like to address in his research
investigation
13. Research Question - A clear statement in the form of a question about the specific
issue that a researcher wishes to answer in the research paper
14. Respondents - Another term that refers to the participants of the study

LESSON 2-3: Technical, Operational, and Expanded Definition

Technical Definition - is a detailed description of a term or a process


Examples:
A database is a structured collection of data that is stored electronically in a
computer system and can be accessed and manipulated by authorized users
through software application.
Sleep is a recurring condition of rest, no conscious thoughts, eyes closed.

Operational Definition - is a description of something in terms of operations (procedures,


actions, or processes) which could be observed and measured.
Examples:
Score refers to the points earned for correct answers on a test.
Rain is drops of water falling from a cloud in the sky.

Expanded Definition - is used to define technical terms with a very detailed explanation,
sometimes, with the use of examples and visuals.
Examples:
Speed is a concept that marks our time. Everybody is in a hurry to go somewhere.
Industry is constantly demanding new inventions that will speed up production so
that the constant cry of the bosses to the workmen is speed it up! The maker of
automobiles boasts of the newest type of a car which is faster than the old model.
Shoppers push and shove each other all about the counters. All are in a hurry to
get something. People who are going to school, shop, or office rush breathlessly
to do important tasks, they gulp their food and swallow it in haste. Restless “hunters
of fun” crowd into places of entertainment. Most of these people cannot sit still.
At a movie, they tap their feet or finger in impatience. Yes, speed is the word of
the day (Gorgon, et al., 2010).

Parts of a Full Sentence Definition

Example:
A crystal is a piece of a homogeneous solid substance having a natural
geometrically regular form with symmetrically arranged plane faces.

LESSON 4: Basic Grammar Rules in Making Definition


1. A complete sentence must include a noun or a pronoun and a verb.
2. A complete sentence must include a subject and a predicate.
3. Adjectives can go directly before the noun they describe, or after it, if separated
by a linking verb.
4. If the subject is singular, use the -s or -es form of a verb. If the subject is plural, use
the base or simple form of the verb.
5. Verbs should remain consistent in tense or form throughout a sentence. Sentences
that start in the past should stay in the past and sentences that start in the present
should stay in the present.
6. A compound subject includes two or more simple subjects. A compound
predicate includes two or more predicates.
7. A compound sentence includes two or more simple sentences/ independent
clauses joined together by a connector.
