Decoding Principles
Direction: Form groups with 5 members (refer to the seat plan). Decode and discuss with your team members the principles of
counseling described in each item on your activity sheet.

Principles of Counseling
A N S U R E A R C E S ______________________1. It is a way of giving clients the courage to face a problem or confidence
that they are pursuing a suitable course of action. This is a valuable principle because it can bring about a sense of relief that
may empower a client to function normally again.

R A C L D I F E I K I N G N H I T___________________________2. It tends to take place while the counselor and counselee

are talking and therefore becomes a logical emotional release. As the relationship goes on, other self-empowering results may
take place later as a result of developments during the counseling relationship. It encourages a client to accept responsibility for
problems and to be more realistic in solving them.

A C I V E D_________________3. Counseling may involve this as one of the several functions that counselors perform. When
this is done, the requirement is that a counselor makes judgments about a counselee’s problems and lays out options for a
course of action. Giving of this has to avoid breeding a relationship in which the counselee feels inferior and emotionally
dependent on the counselor.

S E E R L E A _________________4. Counseling provides clients the opportunity to get emotional release from their pent-up
frustrations and other personal issues. Counseling experience shows tthat as persons begin to explain their concerns to a
sympathetic listener, their tensions begin to subside. They become more relaxed and tend to become more coherent and
rational. This principle helps remove mental blocks by providing a solution to the problem.

T S L I N I N G E S L I K S L _______________________5. Listening attentively to clients is the counselor’s attempt to

understand both the content of the client’s problem as they see it, and the emotions they are experiencing related to the
problem. Counselors do not make interpretations of the client’s problems or offer any premature suggestions as how to deal with
them or solve the issues presented. This principle helps counselors to understand the concerns being presented.

O R E R N I E T N A T O I ________________________6. This involves a change in the client’s emotional self through a

change in basic goals and aspirations. This requires a revision of a client’s level of aspiration to bring it more in line with actual
and realistic attainment. It enables clients to recognize and accept their own limitations.

R S E C T E P _________________7. In all circumstances, clients must be treated with good regard, no matter how peculiar,
strange, disturbed, weird, or utterly different from the counselor. Without this basic element, successful counseling is impossible.
Counselors do not have to like the client, or their values, or their behavior, but they ahve to put their feelings aside and treat the
client with respect.

E Y M H P T A and E P V O S I T I R A R E G D______________________________8. Carl Rogers combined these two

principles that should go along with respect and effective listening skills. The first one requires the counselor to listend and
understand the feelings and perspective of the client and the second one is an aspect of respect. For Rogers, clients have to be
given both “unconditional positive regard” and be treated with respect.

T R A N S E C N E R E F and C R O U T E N T R A N S E C N E R E F
___________________________________________9. When clients are helped to understand transference reactions, they are
empowered to gain understanding of important aspects of their emotional life. Countertransference helps both clients and
counselors to understand the emotional and perceptual reactions and how to effectively manage them.

C A L R I T O I N C I F A, C O N T I O N F O R N A T, and I N T R E T A N I O T E R P
___________________________________________________10. Clarification is an attempt by the counselor to restate what
the client is either saying or feeling, so the client may learn something or understand the issue better. Confrontation and
interpretation are other more advanced principles used by counselors in their interventions.

Role Playing and Counseling Graphic Organizer
Through a role-playing activity, demonstrate how the counseling core values can be exhibited in a counseling session.
Volunteers will be selected by the teacher.
1. Pair up with a classmate. Assign which of you will first play the role of the counselor and which one will be the counselee.
2. In two minutes, the counselee thinks of a life issue to bring up with the counselor, while the counselor internalizes the
counseling core values.
3. Start the role-play. Sustain a counseling session for five minutes.
4. Reverse roles. The counselor now becomes the counselee, and the counselee now becomes the counselor.
5. Repeat the process. The counselee chooses a different life situation to bring up. Restart the role-play.

Direction: Discuss how the core values of counseling were demonstrated during the session. Use the graphic organizer in your
activity sheet to note spectic manifestations of the core values and principles.
