Dynamics - Assignment 2

This document contains 10 physics problems involving kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies moving in plane curvilinear motion. The problems cover topics like constant acceleration, parametric equations of motion, projectile motion, velocity and acceleration vectors, and forces required to maintain constant velocity in the presence of friction. Students are asked to solve each problem by showing the step-by-step working and solutions.

DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

ASSIGNMENT NO. 2

PLANE CURVILINEAR MOTION, RECTANGULAR COORDINATES, NORMAL AND

TANGENTIAL COORDINATES, AND POLAR COORDINATES

I. Problems solving: Solve for the following problems. Show your

solution in proper order.

1. A train starts from rest (at position zero) and moves with
constant acceleration. On first observation, the velocity is 20
m/s and 80s later the velocity is 60 m/s. At 80s, calculate the
position, average velocity, and the constant acceleration over
the interval.

2. At any instant the position of the kite in figure is defined by

the coordinates x = 30t and y = 9t^2 ft, where t is given in
seconds. Determine (a) the equation which describes the path and
the distance of the kite from the boy when t = 2s, (b) the
magnitude and direction of the velocity when t = 2, and (c) the
magnitude and direction of the acceleration when t = 2sec.

3. A ball is ejected from the tube, shown in the figure below with a
horizontal velocity of 12 m/s. If the height of the tube is 6m,
determine the time needed for the ball to strike the floor and
the range R.

4. The flight path of the helicopter as it takes off from A is

defined by the parametric equations x=(2t^2) m and y=(0.04t^3)m,
where t is the time in seconds after takeoff. Determine the
distance the helicopter is from point A and the magnitude of its
velocity and acceleration when t=10s.

5. A particle is moving along the curve y=x-(x^2/400). If the

velocity component in the x direction is Vx=2ft/s, determine the
magnitude of the particle's velocity and acceleration when
x=20ft.

6. A car moves along a straight line path such that its position is
described by the graph shown in the figure below. Construct the
v-t and a-t graphs for the time period 0<t<30s.

7. For the 3500-lb car, determine (a) its mass in slugs, (b) its
weight in newtons, and (c) its mass in kilograms.

8. The rectangular coordinates of a particle are given in

millimeters as functions of time t in seconds by x = 30 cos 2t, y
= 40 sin 2t, and z = 20t + 3t^2. Determine the angle θ 1 between
the position vector r and the velocity v and the angle θ 2 between
the position vector r and the acceleration a, both at time t = 2
s.

9. A toboggan is travelling down a curve which can be approximated

by the parabola y = 0.01x^2. Determine the magnitude of its

acceleration when it reaches point A, where its speed is Va = 10

m/s and it is increasing at the rate of v̇ a=3 m/ s 2.

10. How much force is needed to keep an 85kg-cart moving at constant

velocity on a level concrete road? Use I = 0.04 for the
coefficient of friction.
