This critical journal review summarizes a journal article about implementing the school curriculum for teaching English. It discusses how the curriculum aims to improve education by outlining standards and goals. Schools have freedom within this framework to design learning experiences based on their unique environment and culture. The review examines a case study observing an English class applying the curriculum. It found the teacher effectively motivated and guided students as facilitators, though time constraints made fully delivering materials difficult. Overall, the curriculum and teacher role seemed appropriately implemented to support students, but some challenges remained.

DISCUSSION

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Education is one of the means used by the government to develop human

resources in a country. Through the development of good education it is hoped that the
country will have good human resources as well. This is because in education, in addition
to imparting knowledge, social values and good moral experience are also instilled in
students so that through education human resources will be formed that show the
character of a nation that has good moral and social values.
In the implementation of education in a country, a rule or standard is called the
curriculum. Without a curriculum, education will not work because there are no standards
or guidelines and goals for the education provided. This is in line with what Oliva (1992:
6) states that the curriculum is a plan or program to provide learning experiences that
make students obey school rules. This was also expressed by Lewis (in MKDP, 2011: 2)
that the curriculum is any school effort to influence students to learn, both in the
classroom, on the school grounds, and outside the school. With the curriculum, it will
make education that takes place at school to run so that educational goals are achieved.
The curriculum in a country is compiled and constantly improved to improve
education in a country. Likewise in Indonesia, the curriculum is constantly being
improved which also aims to improve education in Indonesia. For this reason, in creating
a curriculum it must be considered whether the curriculum that was created is really able
to improve in all areas related to education.
Based on the basic and secondary Education Unit Level Curriculum (KTSP)
guidelines made by BPNS, schools are given the freedom to design, develop, and
implement curriculum for learning English subjects in schools according to the situation,
conditions, and potential for local excellence that can be raised by school. The process of
learning English based on KTSP should be easier to implement, because teachers are
given the freedom to develop the competence of students according to the environment
and local culture. Therefore, the success of this process is greatly influenced by the ability
of the teacher to apply and actualize it in learning.
2.2 SUMMARY OF JOURNAL CONTENT

From the research results. To get a more complete picture of KTSP in learning
English at SMA Negeri 1 Banyudono, researchers used a qualitative descriptive method.
Researchers investigated the quality of the English learning process that applied KTSP in
natural settings or in the context of entities. The natural setting is the classroom in SMA
Negeri 1 Banyudono where learning activities take place and the context of the entity is
the process of learning English using KTSP. In this study the research was conducted in
class XI IA2. Fraenkel and Wallen (2000: 502) state that qualitative research is research
that investigates the quality of relationships, activities, situations, or material in certain
activities or situations.
Based on the result of observation, the learning activities were in the line with
KTSP concept. The learning activities which happened in the classroom occurred
interestingly. The teacher managed these activities well. The movement of each activity
jump very smoothly. However, there was weakness in the teaching and learning activities.
The major problem was the limited time allotment in delivering materials. So that, the
teacher had not finished presenting the teaching materials based on the concept of KTSP.
We can conclude that the teacher’s role was appropriate with what was stated in
KTSP. He acted as a motivator, a facilitator, and a guide. The teacher considers the
students as the ‘ friend’s ‘ in the learning activity. He made a good atmosphere of
learning in the class. But, sometimes he faced problem. In addition, if the media doesn’t
run well, he must looking for help. From the observation, we can conclude that student’s
role is line with the KTSP concept. Students acted as doer or subject of learning process.
They were being active and creative during instructions.
However, the weakness is several students kept silent during the learning activity.
The consequence is the teacher must be more active to give feedback and motivation. The
teacher evaluated the learning activity periodically. Evaluation in cognitive Aspects taken
from test daily, tasks, exercise, weekly test, mid-term test and final examination. In
addition, the students who could not pass the minimal score must follow remedial tests. In
psychomotor aspect, the teacher gave the students mark if they performed their attention,
responsibility during the lesson, activity in asking and answering the questions or when
the learners performed their competence to speak English fluently. But, the weakness is
the limited time allotment. It demanded the teacher to become creative and manage the
time well.
In the same idea, Mulyasa (2007) stated four characteristics of KTSP: (a) the full
authority of headmaster and educational unit. (b) parents and society have more
participation. (c) the democratic and professional leadership. (d) transparent teamwork.
Michael said in his book 'Process and Experience in the language Classroom' that
several teacher's roles in classroom are: (a). teachers as coordinator and the facilitator. (b)
the teachers as manager and organizer. (c) the teachers as instructor. (d) the teacher as
investigator and researcher. The students have the important role in learning process.
Pupils are needed to be more active and creative in learning process. It was stated that
learner's role is to build their own knowledge in the accepting of new information. The
pupils must actively search meaning, find regularity and order the events in the world in
the absence of whole information.
Supporting this idea, Dimyati and Mujionoargued the roles of the students are: (a)
the actor in looking for problem and the solving (b) an active participant in doing research
(c) the explorer of problem searching and the solving (d) the inventor of the problem
solving.
Generally, the implementation of KTSP in teaching English at the second grade of
SMA N 1 Banyudono was well done. It was viewed from the learning process which
covered the learning activity occurred, classroom interaction, the teacher's role, student's
role. in addition, the appropriateness of the KTSP implementation in SMA N 1
Banyudono was also viewed from the teaching materials and the evaluation system used
in the school.
Meanwhile, according to the interview and the observation there were also several
weaknesses of the implementation of KTSP in Teaching English in SMA N 1 Banyudono
despite the fact that learning activities conducted in the classroom occurred interestingly,
but the main problem was the limited time allotment in presenting materials, several
teachers had the lack of knowledge of KTSP, several teachers had limited ability in
operating media and had closed minded; they denied the changes in education system and
use a ‘old version’ curriculum and several teachers concerned with cognitive aspect only.

2.3 JOURNAL ADVANTAGES

a. Linkages between journals

The research has a clutter between each discussion. The author is able to present
material in a structured and systematic manner. In this journal, the author is able to
present material that is well structured and systematic. This is all very clear from the way
the author presents the material in his journal by presenting the problem first, and is
equipped with a theory then continues with solving the problem. In addition, in the
research results section, the author is also able to write down the results of the research
very systematically, which is clearly visible from the way the presentation of the material
by the presenter who writes down the results of his research then writes down the reasons
for obtaining these results. The relationship between the research results obtained is also
very clearly presented in this journal. This can all be seen from the results of research
with observation, documentation and analysis. contained in this journal that are related to
one another.

b. Journal content engagement

This journal has presented material neatly and well regarding The Implementation
Of School Curriculum In Teaching English. The results of the study indicate that the
application of KTSP in teaching English at SMA N 1 Banyudono in 20002011/2012
teaching is well done and in the application of KTPs in teaching English it has advantages
and disadvantages. The advantage is that schools are given the freedom to design,
develop, and implement a curriculum for learning English subjects in schools according
to the situation, conditions, and potential for local excellence that the school can raise.
And the weaknesses the limited time allotment. It demanded the teacher to become
creative and manage the time well.

2.4 JOURNAL OF WEAKNESSES

a. Linkages between journals

Overall, this journal can indeed be categorized into a good journal because the
author is able to convey the material in this journal in a systematic, structured, and
interrelated way. Although there are slight weaknesses in the content of the conclusions,
researchers draw too many conclusions that can make ordinary people confused in
understanding the contents. it is better if the conclusion is made into a paragraph.

b. Journal content engagement

In my opinion, the contents in this journal are very up to date because they are
equipped with concrete data and theories. so this journal is worth reading because its
content contains the application of English lessons in the school curriculum.
2.5 IMPLICATIONS

a. Theory
The theories about student development used by the presenter are clearly
presented in this journal, both in theory and the results of observations used by the author
in his research. So that this journal has a fairly good and guaranteed research theory. This
assurance can be seen clearly from the reference journals used by the author in making
this journal which are quite up to date. In addition, the success of researchers in proving
the theories presented by the researchers in each journal is very good and increases the
security of information from each of these journals. and this research really adds insight
to the readers.

b. Indonesian Development Program

In this journal, it is very clear that development programs can occur from the
research activities carried out. English is an international language that must be studied in
every country, including Indonesia. Therefore, teaching English needs to be implemented
in the curriculum in order to give birth to advanced generations in following world
developments.

c. Student Analysis
This journal can be used as an insight-enhancing material for students who are
quite good. Students will be able to better understand that English language lessons are
important to learn. and although as explained in the research, students and teachers are
required to be more active in the application of KTSP in teaching English. and this
journal is highly recommended to read in order to add insight about KTSP and teaching
English in its application. From this journal, students are also able to analyze their
younger siblings and those around them, whether they can understand the implementation
of English lessons well or not.
CHAPTER III

CLOSING

3.1 CONCLUSION

In this journal The Implementation Of School Curriculum In Teaching English,

the KTSP curriculum can run well, but besides that there are some drawbacks. teachers
and students have an important task in this learning, teachers are required to be able to
allocate time properly, while students are required to be more active and creative.
The way the authors convey their material in this journal is quite good. Because
the author is able to present material in a systematic, structured, and interrelated manner
with one another. These advantages make this jural classified as a good journal to be used
as a reference to add insight to the knowledge of readers.
So it can be concluded that in the application of the school curriculum in language
building must be improved again, so that students are not bored and always active in the
entire learning process to create a generation capable of engaging in the international
world. so for that the teacher is very important in this matter.

3.2 SUGGESTION

It needs to be redeveloped to improve learning outcomes and learning activities

using problem-based learning models, and it is hoped that students will be motivated in
learning and able to increase the level of learning outcomes and activities according to the
expected goals. And prospective educators are able to apply the KTSP-based learning
model in the process of teaching and learning activities in the field later so that students
are interested and can improve learning outcomes and learning activities properly.
You can read the criticisms of this journal as a source of learning which is quite
relevant. With this journal's critique, it is hoped that readers will be able to grasp the
meaning contained in the contents of the research.
