Lab1 Emi 145

This document summarizes a lab assignment on familiarization with laboratory equipment and instruments. The student was asked to study basic instruments and their symbols, and familiarize themselves with the lab resources. They provided a table listing 19 instruments including their functions, units of measurement, and ranges. In their analysis, the student noted they learned about commonly used electrical engineering instruments like multimeters, LCR meters, power supplies, and wattmeters. They also answered a post-lab question defining the basic components of a multimeter.

Lab # 1(Familiarization with laboratory equipment and study of
instruments and their symbols)

Objectives:
● To study basic instruments and their symbols.
● To familiarize ourselves with the laboratory resources and equipment.
Concept of lab:
Concept of this lab was to give us an introductory lesson on various electronic devices used for
measurement and calculation of certain parameters.

Task 1:

Sr.NO NAME OF FUNCTIONALITY UNIT RANGE

INSTRUMENT
1 Impedance analyzer It is a device that can Ohm Specified by the user
measure how a particular
substance or electrode
surface responds to a a
potential that is constantly
increased and decreased
within certain predefined
limits

2 Digital Megohmmeter It is a special type of Mega Ranges from 500 V to 2

(Megger) ohmmeter used to measure ohm kV
the electrical resistance of
insulators.
3 Kelvin double bridge full It is a measuring instrument Ohm 1 to 0.00001 Ohms
set used to measure unknown
electrical resistors below 1
ohm.
4 Wheatstone Bridge It is an electrical circuit Ohm
used to measure an
unknown electrical
resistance by balancing two
legs of a bridge circuit, one
leg of which includes the
unknown component.
5 Lux meter It is a device for measuring Lx
brightness
6 Digital clamp-meter It is a device that measures
current in amperes (A) by
magnetic induction. This
type of measurement is
non-intrusive and very
convenient.
7 Portable power analyzer It measures electrical power Watts
characteristics of devices
that generate, transform, or
consume electricity.
8 Digital Earth Tester This equipment is used to Ohm It has three ranges for earth
measure earth resistance resistance measurement
and earth voltage. which are 19.99 ohm,
199.9 ohm, and 1.999 kilo
ohm respectively.
9 Temperature sensor It is a device that gathers
data concerning the
temperature from a source Kelvin
and converts it to a form
that can be understood
either by an observer or
another device.
10 LAN Tester It can be used in a
workplace, and is ideal for
technical service
professionals and network
administrators
11 Multi-meter It measures electrical
properties such as AC or
DC voltage, current, and
resistance.
12 EMF meter (measures EMF measure AC and DC Amperes 50 to 60 hz
electric and magnetic currents, or fields of
field) electricity.

13 Capacitance meter It is used to determine the Farads

potential capacitance of a
given capacitor.
14 Galvanometer It is used to measure the Amperes
presence as well as the
direction and power of
currents.
15 Phase sequence meter It is used for detecting
sequence of supply in three
phase electric circuit.
16 Frequency counter A frequency counter is an Hz
electronic instrument, or
component of one, that is
used for measuring
frequency.

17 LCR meter An LCR meter is a device Ohms

that is used to test the
electrical impedance of a
piece of equipment.
18 Power supplies A power supply is
a hardware component that
supplies power to an
electrical device
19 Wattmeter It gives the indication of the Watts
amount of electrical energy
being supplied to a circuit.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS:

In this lab we learn about the instrument which we use in electrical engineering such as multimeter, lCR
meter, power supplies, wattmeter etc. etc. the multimeter, power supplies has no specific unit and range
because the multimeter measures current in ac and dc, also measures the voltage, resistor. The human can
specify that what range we will use. Also specify the unit.
Post Lab:

Q1: What does a multi-meter consist of? Write a short description of each part of a multi-
meter along with their circuit diagrams.

A multimeter is a versatile electronic tool used to measure various electrical properties such as
voltage, current, resistance and continuity. The basic components of a multimeter include:

1-Display: A digital and analog display that shows the measured value.
2-Function selector switch: A rotary or push button switch used to select the type of
measurement to be performed.

3-Power switch: An on/off switch to turn the multimeter on and off.

4-Battery: A power source of the multimeter, which is typically a 9-volt battery.
5-Circuit protection: Fuses and another components that protect the multimeter from damage
due to overvoltage or overload conditions.

6-Input jacks: Connection points where the test leads are plugged in.

7-Range selector switch: A switch used to select the measurement range based on the expected
value of the property being measured.
