H I S T O R Y
OF THE PHILLIPINES
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD
ancient literature was written on perishable
materials like dried leaves, bamboo cylinders
and bark of trees. Literature was handed
down to us through the word of mouth. The
first filipino alphabet called baybayin was
replaced by the roman alphabet.
SPANISH PERIOD
The basis of religious practices was Christian
doctrine (Doctrina Cristiana). It was also the
first Tagalog and Spanish book printed in the
Philippines in 1593.Jose Rizal’s Noli me Tangere
and El filibusterismo made very powerful
contrubutions among the filipinos in the
introduction of rejecting spanish rules.
AMERICAN COLONIAL
PERIOD
in this period, the philippine literature in
Spanish was starting to lose its track in the
first decade.Even if Philippine literature was
in english, the preservation of the content
for Filipino was achieved. Sarzuela was
overpowered by the English drama.
JAPANESE PERIOD
They required us to use our native language,
Tagalog. Filipino writers who were free to write were
those who lived in the United States. Most writers
and authors were forced to go underground or write
in Tagalog. The writers in English shifted to writing
in Filipino. During this time, Filipino literature was
given a rest. Many Filipino writers created plays,
poems and short stories.
CONTEMPORARY
PERIOD
the Philippines regained its freedom
and the Filipino flag waved joyously
alone. Phillipines literature was also
revived during this period. Many young
people became activists to ask for
changes in the government.
