people
think
that
Hollywood is an exciting and glamorous place, but not many
people know the story of its origins. Hollywood was born from violence and crime. When
the film industry started in the early twentieth century, most directors made films on the
east coast of America, in New York and Chicago. However, the inventor Thomas Edison
had the patents for almost all the sound equipment, electric lights and techniques that
were necessary to make films. Film makers had to pay Edison a lot of money to use them.
A lot of film makers stole equipment or copied Edisons inventions and techniques illegally
because they couldnt pay these expensive costs. Edison was furious so he paid some
criminals to attack actors in these films. They even tried to murder at least one of the
directors.
The
situation
became
very
violent
and many film makers left to escape from Edison and his criminals. They looked for an
area that was cheap, had a lot of light and a good climate all year. They found the ideal
place in California Los Angeles. Los Angeles had a fantastic climate, it wasnt expensive
and it was only 150 kilometres from Mexico, so it was easy for the film makers to escape if
there were any problems with illegal equipment. A few years later Edison lost his
monopoly and the crime and violence ended, but Hollywood remained.

SHOPPING
FOR LIFE
The food you buy in the supermarket says a lot about you and
your
lifestyle. Mark Willis, an expert in consumer habits, analyzes two
peoples shopping:
CASE 1 (SIMON AND JENNY)
Well, theres a chicken and some red meat. There isnt any fish, except tinned tuna. There
are three kilos of potatoes and some onions. There arent many other fresh vegetables, but
there are a lot of frozen vegetables. Theyve also got some frozen burgers, a pizza and
some other pre-prepared food. Id say this is for a couple with young children. Probably
both parents work and they dont have much time to prepare meals during the week. Its
all basic food and there isnt any wine or beer, just fruit juice and milk.
CASE 2 (JUSTIN)
Lets see. Theres a bottle of white wine, some salmon and cream, a selection of different
types of cheese and a loaf of freshly baked bread. There are some olives and some fresh fruit,
mixed vegetables and a big box of chocolates. I think that this is a special meal, probably for
two people or a few friends. This person probably doesnt cook very often and he or she is
buying just enough food for this meal, not for the whole week. Its probably a younger person
who likes good food and sweets!
