Function

1. A function is a relation that assigns each element from the domain to exactly one element in the range. 2. To evaluate a function means replacing the variable in the function, such as x, with a value from the domain and computing the result. 3. Some examples of evaluating functions are shown, such as finding f(2) when f(x) = 2 + x - x^2, or finding g(-2) when g(x) = x^2 + 7. The key steps are copying the original function, substituting the given value for x, and then simplifying the expression.

2. The set of all x or input values.
4. Collection of well – defined and distinct object called elements
that share a common characteristics.
5. The set of all y or output values.
1. Is a rule that relates values ( domain) from a set of values
( range )
3. _____pair: pair of objects taken in specific order.

Concept
What is relation?
Relation is a function.

Function – “ special relation “

- Every x- values must be associated to only one y-value.

*Mapping
*Sets
* Grapping

Mapping – Show how the elements are paired.

- Flow chart of a function.

Function – Input and Output

“Rule”
Function = “f(x) = …?
f of x

Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in the function, in this case x, with a value from the
function’s domain and computing for the result.

f(x) = 2x + 1

How to Equivalent Function

Ex. 1 f(x) = 3x + 4 if x = 2
f(x) = 3x + 4 copy the given
f(2) = 3(2) + 4 replace x with 2
=6+4 perform operation
= 10 Answer

Ex. 2 g(x) = 1 – x + x 2 if x = 3
a. g(3) = -11 c. g(3) = 7
b. g(3) = -7 d. g(3) = 11
g(x) = 1 – x + x 2 copy the given

= 1 – 3 + 32 replace x with 3

=1–3+9 perform operation

= 1 – 12
=7 Answer

h(x) = x 2 + 2 for x = -3

h(x) = x 2 + 2

h(-3) = (−3)2 + 2

h(-3) = 9 + 2
h(-3) = 11

Now it’s your turn.

Directions: Evaluate the following functions:

1. f(x) = 2 + x - x 2 find f(2)

2. g(x) = x 2 + 7 find g(-2)
3. h(x) = 4x – 2 find h(3)
4. a(c) = 2c + c 2 – 2 find a(-1)
5. b(d) = −4 d 2 find b(-3)
6. g(a) = 3a – 2 find g(1)
7. g(x) = 3x – 3 find g(-6)
8. p(a) = −43 a find p(1)
9. f(x) = x 2 – 3x find f(-8)
10. h(n) = −2 n2 find h(4)
x−2
11. f(x)= find f(7)
2 x−7
12. f(x)=5x find f(10)
3 x −x
13. f(x)= find f(3)
2x
4 x−1
14. f(x) = find f(2)
x
15. f(x) = ax-6+a-4a find f(8)
What you need to remember

● The classic way of writing a function is f(x) =..

● To evaluate a function is to replace / substitute its variables with a given number of

expressions.
● It is recommended putting the substituted values inside the parentheses ( ). So you don’t make
mistakes.
